Some here might be interested to know that the plastic Harbor Freight ammo box fits really nicely in this spot. Hard to go wrong at only 4 bucks...

There's space below it too, where I'm currently keeping some gloves and other soft, compressible items...

Yep - nice find. Looks like exactly the same ammo cans I get at Wamfart (aka Walmart) for about the same price. Too lazy right now to go downstairs and do everything involved in verifying, but I'm pretty sure those are the same size cans. For anyone interested and who finds it easier to get to a Wamfart than a Harbor Freight.

edited: If the HF one has a Plano logo on it, then it is the same as the Wamfart one.

A couple months ago I added insulation to the inside of the compartment, then I added an LED strip, one of the same ones I have as the underhood lights. It is wired to the rear dome light, so whenever the dome light is on, this light is on. It's nice to have.

Ancient question you've likely figured out, but to answer for future browsers- yes.

I have one of them in the '96 now that I picked off a junkyard truck. The rubber flap I made a template for out of cardboard, then cut out of a thin sheet of rubber.

Anyone know the size of the grommet here? Wondering if it's a 1" or if it's smaller.

Exactly. In 4Runner terms that’s kind of a lot of real estate. Seems that an access door on that side and some way of protecting the vent assembly below could be handy.

I think the old 1st gens had cargo doors on both sides.

I like that, just need to figure out a door

Curious, anyone here make the time to figure-out a hatch door for this space? Routing wires for a back-up camera, ham radio antenna, and I was reminded of this wasted space...

I have this panel off now to do some wiring for a rear lighting project and a ham radio install. The openning itself is approx 7" wide, about 15" tall (more space within). A couple quarts of oil fits with ease.

Contemplating what can be done to create access to this area...

I got as far as this...

gathering an assortment of tools, and looked into lightweight hinges at THD... I'm thinking to hinge the top and some type of catch at the bottom.

Busy on house projects, but might have time on Sunday.

not to oversimplify but you could probably use the same concept as the other side, well, i have the smaller one on my 96 but im guessing its the same.
not using another of these doors but the idea of catches on the bottom and a rotating latch up top.

I just meant to use that method to hold the door on, i thought about making some lower catches and a rotating latch elsewhere but it could work here maybe.

My 97 has the smaller passenger side cargo stash so maybe I could upgrade that to the larger 99 panel from a junk yard, and then reuse the small door on my old on one the driver side for a custom hatch lid..

I used a 5 inch deckplate for mine. I also built a small shelf on the bottom to make it flat. I fit 2 qts of oil, a ball joint seperator, my Noco GB40, a spare shirt, and some rags in there.
