Swapping out old radio for a new stock radio?

I plan on swapping out my old stock unit due to some small tech issues (illumination on radio is gone and the cd changer started to act up) for another stock unit. I do note the added benefits of an aftermarket unit but a) would like to keep the clean stock look and (b) don't want to be bothered with always removing the head unit when pared up.

So I've looked around at ebay and see
this unit as the front runner. yotatech gave some good feedback and thoughts.

Many seem to suggest adding an aftermarket but this gives me most of the same benefits. Thoughts?

Does your present radio have the same Toyota number and the JBL gold emblem?

no to both. from what i have found you can swap in the same generation once you match the pin count.

It is most unlikely that your present setup has the 20 pin plug shown on the rear of the Ebay unit. In addition the JBL units usually need the matching JBL amplifier and there may be other missing components of the JBL system. This unit may also have problems fitting through your dash.

there is a non-JBL that is also 20-pin. I'll try to either find more info on my unit online or pull it to see the back

Sounds like a good first step. You may find that the display in your present unit uses replaceable lamps.

from the research i've found. the illumination is a bulb that can be soldered back once the replacement is found (not a general carry in most stores it seems).

the bulb is part of the problem as the CD changer works sometimes. Other times it works then if i turn off the car and restart it doesn't play anymore.

It's too bad that's a great looking radio.

it had a solid run and the light went out (after the tap back to life went out as well) before i got the 4runner so it was something i was determined to fix in some manner.
