The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

Nice, those are some good torque numbers! Was that on a dynojet? Nvm I just looked on FB and it's a Mustang dyno.

Thanks Jerod! Mustang dyno... and yes... significantly more torque which is cool. This is a JDM engine and I feel like I got a good one - 20K miles later still has 200 PSI on the dry compression test, runs/sounds like a sewing machine and produces some good dyno results. Kind of wish I brought them a 2.1” pulley but I can always go back again. Will share dyno graphs and AEM FIC-6 maps when I have them.

I'm hoping I get similar numbers out of my JDM as well! My old engine was definitely tired. My dyno run only put out 256 RWTQ, and I've got a whole lot more on my engine as far as go-fast parts. Sounds like you got a real winner with that much with just the 2.2" pulley and a tune!

Definitely crossing fingers your “first start” on the JDM is everything you hope it will be! I trust in Toyota quality control — if it wasn’t terribly abused in Japan you’ll have a much fresher foundation to work with. And hey... if you ever want to do the straight axle conversion, you’ll have the oil pan to do it with.

Thanks for being such an awesome member of the T4R community Looking forward to seeing the progress on the TuRD

Hey guys I have run into a new issue right in the middle of moving and right before the holiday, I am hoping some one can shed some light on this and either ease my stress or seal my fate.

I have a 98 4runner with 195k that I have put a gen 1 supercharger on as of 189k. I noticed this morning when I started the truck that I had a lot of white smoke coming out the tailpipe. Not alarming at first, currently 40 degrees and raining and parked outside overnight. I pulled up to my out place to move some more stuff and noticed a rough idle, no fluctuating RPMS but some light vibrations. I also noticed that I still had some white smoke coming out of the tailpipe not as much as cold start but after I had been driving for 20 mins including on the highway. The temp needle stays right where it should be.

I checked the oil and it didnt look milky and I checked the coolant, I havent lost any and it doesnt look contaminated. I smelled the exhaust and it didnt smell overly sweet. I check the vacuum lines and didnt find anything. After checking everything I noticed that the rough idle was gone.

Can someone shed some light on whats going on. My heart is sinking thinking it is the headgasket.

Depending on what is burning, it has a different color. Oil burns a bit bluish in color and stinks pretty bad. Too much fuel will burn a sooty black. Coolant will burn almost pure white (it's mostly water after all) and have little to no odor, just sweet.

Check your overflow tank, that will empty before your radiator loses any fluid. If that has dropped, you engine is drinking coolant.

Confirmed that the engine is drinking coolant. Now the debate is fix or sell the truck. What is the going rate for a 1st gen SC with all the fixings?

Depending on condition, $1000 to $2000.

Gotcha pretty big range but I understand why.

Current status of the charger:
Fresh oil
New pulley
Comes with new nose bearings and coupler. Was going to install when I did the T belt job that is no longer happening

I would also be including:
O gasket
IAC valve
Pulley bracket
Oil dip stick bracket
Belt

Aww, it never even made it on the truck? That's a real bummer. There a Facebook group called 3.4 Supercharged, if you post photos on there with a price it will sell quickly.

Why is fixing the truck out of the question? Head gaskets are pretty cheap. Job isn't that hard to do yourself, and possibly not that expensive for a shop to do. Depending on the rest of the vehicle's condition, fixing it could last a long time. These things are work horses and a head gasket leak isn't a death sentence. Hell, to do the heads you'd do a timing belt anyway. And to do the supercharger you'd have half the intake off anyway. So just the lower intake manifold, and exhaust manifolds and you can pull the heads off... Timing belt and supercharger install gets you about 40% to a head job anyhow...

It made it on the truck. I was going to take it off and do the full rebuild while it was off doing the timing belt.

I was looking into it a bit. I looked at the head gasket DIY and got a bit nervous as it is digging pretty deep into the engine and I have never done a head gasket or timing belt job. Also to add to the issue is I dont have a garage anymore and it is currently 35 degrees outside.

As for the health of the truck. I just last weekend I finished doing TREs, Upper and lower BJs. Other wise it is a rather healthy California truck with 190k.

It is pretty deep in the engine. I will be taking off the cylinder head for the first time ever, and I've worked on pretty much everything on a 4Runner. I stripped one down to the frame once. It's easier to replace the motor than it is to fix a head gasket because you also have to have the head machined, take off the camshafts and align all the timing marks on the cams, cam gears, crankshaft, etc. It takes a lot of time. I can't imagine doing it out in the cold all winter either.

Yeah doing it outside would be insane. In my opinion these are the easier overall engines to work on. I would just hate to see a good truck get crushed because of a head gasket. Machining the heads is ideal, but you may be able to get away without it. Just like head bolts. They are torque to yield meaning one-time-use but I've seen guys reuse them in the same position they were and haven't had an issue. If it were me, I would save the vehicle. Look at it this way: try to take the engine apart without spending any additional money on parts yet, and see how far you get. If you get fed up or frustrated you could then throw in the towel and either opt for a new engine or junk the truck which you would have done anyway. You do need a lot of space to take it all apart. But overal it's a simple job (keep in mind, simple is not necessarily easy). I also don't know your vehicle situation. You'll have it down for a long time and if it's your daily driver then this may not be the most ideal.

As for the cams and stuff, it's all simple. Put in a bolt to keep the sprockets spring tension, Mark everything and take off the bearing caps in the right order and it's done. A lot of work, but in my opinion worth it as compared to 6-7 years of car payments.

Installed Brand New Magnuson Supercharger @ 126K miles

I just wanted to share some pics and a quick video following the install of my new Magnuson supercharger. Purchased the unit from URD and picked up some Denso IK22 plugs to install with it. Also, cleaned the MAF sensor and reset the ECM to help it relearn the fuel trims with the added boost. The ECM seems to be catching on as the power delivery is getting smoother and smoother. Have not done any supporting fuel mods yet since I live at 5800 ft and I think I should be ok with the stock pulley and 91 octane. Super happy with the new-found power and drive-ability that the supercharger brings.

Excuse the somewhat dirty engine bay:

Installed an Autometer vac/boost gauge:

First solid pull after install, though I restrained from WOT since I was a little nervous. lol

Hello. I just bought a 98 4runner that has the SC on it.

The guy I bought it from gave me brand new supra injectors for it. Said he seen on here people running them with great results.

I seen some post regarding a few installing some on your 4runners. What o-rings did you use? All stock or a combination of stock 4runner and just one of the stock supra injectors? The post regarding this part I don't quite follow.

Also my 4runners motor besides the SC (stock pulley) and IK22 plugs is factory stock.

It does have a new exhaust from manifold back, new catalytic converter and new JBA cat back exhaust. Stock air intake and fuel pump.

The previous owner did give me a new from URD bigger fuel pump.

Would you recommend the supra injectors for a vehicle setup like mine?

Would it need the fuel pump also?

I am experiencing pinging in upper gears. If I go to pass someone or hit a hill if I keep it revved throughout the powerband just very minimal. (Hope that makes sense)

Or are you you guys who are running the supra injectors doing so with a lot of other mods too.

326k miles. Engine runs perfect. Supercharger has been rebuilt once before. I am all stock and run 91 octane only. I replaced the spark plugs and fuel filter at the time of the supercharger install and I have yet to encounter and problems with pinging or anything like that.

That's awesome. Mine only has 200xxx miles and all I run in it is 91 octane also (only thing available) it isn't horribly bad but I do encounter it.

Well I ended up installing an old Split Second TMC1.1 box on my 4runner today. Previous owner had it and just gave it to me.
Called up split second last week... (very helpful, even emailed me the installation instructions for my specific 4runner '98)

Installed it today and no more pinging!!!

Ended with adjustment dial right between 1st and 2nd marks.

It's old school but I didn't have to spend any money on it. LOL

So now I'll save up for the 7th injector kit and not worry about it until then. [emoji16]

Quick questions for you guys that are currently supercharged. I may go the supercharged route in the near future. Any reliability issues vs stock? Maintenance cycles? Upgraded pulley and 7th injector necessary when transitioning to supercharged?

Thanks in advanced.

I can give you my experience and opinion, but know that I'm more adventurous than most.

Reliability issues are not an issue. Some claim you "need" extra fuel or cooling capability with a stock 6 PSI supercharger but many show it's not the case. I made it 200k on my motor while being supercharged the whole time since the start. It's only after I started pushing more boost and more power I started seeing wear on the engine. Some engines are ping happy (rare) but it doesn't seem to harm these engines. The bottom end is overbuilt for what it is (can support up to 15 PSI and 400 RWHP without any bottom end upgrades) so a little pinging does nothing to this engine.

The 2.2" pulley and 2.1" pulley are just for making more power. I'm talking about only 20-30 HP more with the 2.1", and 10-15 HP more with the 2.2" than a stock charger though. Anything smaller than stock though will NEED more fuel and a way to manage it, like the 7th injector.

My advice is to just start with a supercharger, it's a bolt-on and go have fun sort of thing. If it's not living up to what you hoped, then look into smaller pulleys and tuning the engine.
