Trans overheating???

last time i went through CO i was in my bmw and we were flying up those passes around 100+....its going to be interesting going out the with the 4r probably bearly able to do the speed limit.
turn off O/D uphill, you'll be passing people.

I took a road trip from indy to Evansville again about 70 outside temp and running 80mph with the OD off the tranny temp stayed about 180 with the OD on it went to 210 rather quick.

Conclusion with that cooler I have to run with the OD off, which isn't that bad considering the motor is underpowered anyways with oversized tires , wind stopper of a roof rack and the genera, vehicle weight to power ratio at 80 I was about 3600rpm which isn't ideal but won't be too hard on that motor.

I also concluded that even a bigger cooler wouldn't help considering that in 30 seconds it would jump to 210 and be on its way to 240.

Does anyone run a scan gauge II with the factory cooler? I would be curious to see what temps you guys see?

I keep the etc button on all the time I figure with oversize tires and a roof rack and a lift all couples together with a small motor that it mimics mountains or at least can benefit from higher shift points

Before I bypassed the radiator, I saw somewhere around 21x-22x when it was pushed hard. The factory cooler is more effective at keeping higher temps down towards coolant temperature due to the more efficient liquid to liquid heat convection vs air to liquid heat convection that occurs when the radiator is bypassed.

I wonder how well a couple larger coolers linked in series would keep up with the heat dissipation on hard runs...

The great him runs a pretty heavy duty dual cooler setup. I think it works well for him.

I live in Indiana and it gets cold here a lot and I notice it takes a lot longer with the bypass for my tranny fluid to warm up along with that most of my trips are short I have decided that i am going to replace the radiator and run my external cooler in series (obviously routed after the rad then external cooler then back to the tranny)

That way I have to worry a little less about overheating as I have stated for MY setup and driving style the 70268 is not enough
