TRD Pro Clunk

Mine is at the dealer now. Will post the results once I get it back.

Please do. My dealer is an ass and only purchased there out of no other choices. I have not brought to them yet because I despise the repair department and sales for that matter too.

What did you figure out?

Still in for Service (Day 5) they also contacted Toyota for a resolution with opening a task case.

Toyota response is that this is a "Normal" condition.

I have expressed that I am not satisfied with this lack of a resolution and the Service manager has been very helpful and is siding with me on this and believes that there will be a resolution in the future as more TRDPs hit the road. I am going to pick up the truck now as the Prius they gave me is not doing well with the snow and Ice and I will post my service notes so that folks can print it out and include when they take theirs in for service. It helped me by bringing in some of your notes.

Here is the service report after picking it back up. The clunk is still there.

If it's temperature related and only doing it in cooler temps, it could be the fluid inside of the shocks and struts shifting around. Did they check the control arms for marks given the closeness of the suspension to them?

My 2005 subaru STi had a rear strut clunk as did everyone else's. It was not going to hurt the car but it was sometimes an annoyance.

IMO it's probably not a defect and the nature of the beast. Those expensive shocks are for performance not to make the truck ride smoother, quieter on road. Just my opinion.

Fluids don't make clunk noises even when it's cold. Components and parts make noises.

OP I know it's not in the spirit of the whole Toyota experience nor is it in the "principle" of the thing but I'm pretty sure if you want it fixed in a timely manner you will have to do what I outlined in my previous post in this thread.

If you want to take an hour of a day sometime I will even give you my phone number (through pm) and talk you through the trouble shooting techniques. I will even talk to you the WHOLE TIME you are doing it to further pinpoint the issues. This goes for any one of you guys who have a clunk like this.

I am not magic nor am I a miracle worker but I do know how to identify and document problems. You might find it, you might not but ATEOTD you can go back to the shop and confidently tell them what is NOT making the noise. Believe it or not that is extremely important too in diagnosing the problem.
So, you have an hour?

Reputation point for you Greg. What an amazing gesture. As sappy as this is going to sound- It makes me smile when complete strangers are willing to give time out of their own busy lives to help others out- across the country, for no other reason than they are just good people. More of this is needed in the world and via the internet.

No cyberbullying here. Have a Coke and a smile.

Damm! That is extremely generous 1engineer - I have a hard time getting that kind of service out of some of my PAID employees. You sir, are awesome.

That is awesome. You sir are a class act. I would jump on your offer if it wasn't 9 degrees outside with a wind chill of -6 degrees. I also don't keep the TRDP in a garage. Times like this I really wished I lived in a warmer climate.

I did spend some time on the phone today with Toyo Customer Service and was escalated two levels. I expressed my disappointment with the issue but was not irate at all. I did say that these things do happen and I am just trying to make sure the TRD Product managers and engineers that spec'ed these struts are aware that a lot of folks are experiencing the same thing. Minus this clunk I think its an excellent vehicle and I want to keep it for many years.

Note: The service manager did say that they didn't see any signs of anything making contact to something else.

I do believe in addition to self troubleshooting, if anyone else is experiencing this same issue, it would help if you logged a CS case to hit critical mass as there are not that many TRDPs on the road. I called 800-331-4331 Pressed 5 then 2 to get to a live person.

^ Now that is one stand up brotha trying to help fellow brothas!

I appreciate the thanks guys. With that said there are few things in life more frustrating on a vehicle than:
1. An unexplained noise.
2. A water leak.
3. A wind noise.

They are all extremely hard to diagnose and even harder to fix. While I think the actual number of people who have this "clunk" is small (compared to 4Runner sales) they will probably get a resolution faster if an individual owner figures it out instead of waiting on Toyota.

With that said the only real difference between the TRD Pro and the SR5 or TE (non KDSS) is the shocks and springs. These are items that would cause a clunk from underneath. The SR5 has had no real reports of a clunk from the suspension so before even testing I would look at specifically the shocks and springs on the TRD Pro.

There have been reports (as shown above) where these vehicles have been into the shop and even after inspection there have been no signs of rubbing or impact. If we are to take them at their word then there might be something internal within the shock that could cause a "clunk," since that is one of the only real differences between the non noisy SR5 and the TRD Pro.

I would start there.

Klunk in Front

I too have a wicked loud klunk coming from the front of my TRD Pro suspension. It is quite pronounced. I will bring the truck to dealer and report back.

Does the noise develop or did you notice from the start? Coming up on a 1000 miles and have not heard anything yet.

It started around 2K miles...I have 3.5K on the truck now. My wife rode in the truck with me the other day and remarked " boy, that sounds bad..."

Bilstein hasn't received any warranty inquiries from Toyota on the clunk. They basically said the clunking could be caused from any slightly loose component of the front end.

For those of you taking it into the shop soon ask the mechanic to check the shock oil level in the remote reservoir please.

Now that it's starting to get colder here (10 degrees) I am noticing a louder noise in the front. I wouldn't necessarily call it a "clunk" but it's a more noticeable "thud". It's still not that big of a deal on my end- thank goodness!

I'm bringing it in on Friday to have the shop tighten up the shocks in the front.

I'll post what I find out.
