TRD Pro Clunk

IT ONLY TOOK 15 months, 21,000 miles, and 9 SERVICE APPOINTMENTS...

I can with reasonable confidence say that my "clunk" is FINALLY gone. It took 9 service appointments. Along the way they tightened & torqued stuff over and over, partially replaced driver's side suspension, had Factory Tech come out, etc.

On my 8th visit the Factory tech acknowledged the noise but stated the unit suspension was fully functional and no safety issues. He also stated Toyota/TRD is aware of the clunk issue (from multiple consumer/dealer service complaints) and was working on further evaluating it. I did not expect much after that. 3 weeks later the dealer called and said they received a shipment of parts with my name on it. Dropped the truck off Monday and it took 2 days for them to install everything. It appears they replaced the Front AND the Back Bilsteins. I am not sure what else was replaced.

So far, no clunk. I cannot fully be confident until we have some much colder weather (it was in the 40's this morning) but in today's "cool" temps it is still quiet. Before, I would get clunking all the time.

Hopefully this may help some of you other guys get it resolved too. If you need it, my Toyota Case # was 160680821.

Back when I had just the Driver's side replaced, the Assembly Number was "430151V", and it appears to be the same/unchanged in my new invoice when the same part was replaced.

Maybe it is some of the supporting hardware that is different? Unfortunately, my new invoice does not break down the assembly into the individual components.

Correct. When they replaced it the 1st time I saw that and said "hey, I don't have KDSS". But it was the exact same Bilstein part that they had replaced.

Maybe you should check with Bilstein and see if that shock is different from one without KDSS. Originally the TRD Pro had KDSS and KDSS was dropped when the production model came out.

Long shot maybe �� Causing the clunk?

That's not the part number. The part number is listed as PTR13-89160 on the invoice, which is indeed different than the original part # (PTR13-89150) for the TRD suspension kit.

That part number encompasses the entire kit (front coilover assemblies and rear shocks) so it's hard to say what exactly has changed without looking at the individual components. Checking the part numbers of each piece would be a good place to start.

Congrats, man! Hopefully it is truly gone...keep us posted as to whether it remains gone or if it resurfaces once it gets colder or as the newly installed parts "break-in"

That's not the part number. The part number is listed as PTR13-89160 on the invoice, which is indeed different than the original part # (PTR13-89150) for the TRD suspension kit.

That part number encompasses the entire kit (front coilover assemblies and rear shocks) so it's hard to say what exactly has changed without looking at the individual components. Checking the part numbers of each piece would be a good place to start.

Here's a breakdown of the original part numbers for comparison:

Front:
PTR13-89150-LF
PTR13-89150-RF
PTR13-89150-AA (springs)

Rear:
PTR13-89150-LR
PTR13-89150-RR

UPDATE: Well it is beautiful in the 70's now (finally!) but we did have a few cold mornings and STILL NO CLUNK. Also did some light off-roading and no clunk whatsoever. Keeping fingers crossed but it looks like replacing everything fixed the clunk. I hope the rest of you have the same luck!

Yeah I had it on my 2016 Pro. I went through the steps that all the people above have done and finally just replaced the front suspension with an Icon remote resi system....clunk gone.

We dont have the KDSS and its a SR5 premium. I just noticed the clunking noise about a month ago; wife drives it most of the time.

Is there another thread about non TRD Pros having this issue?

Without knowing more details I would say the clunking could be related to the sway bar links.

My 2004 SR5 clunked when I first bought it but Toyota couldn't find anything wrong. 9 years later the clunk was so bad it sounded and felt like the beat-up taxi's in DC going over the equally beat-up streets. I replaced the sway bar links and it all went away.

Having learned more about the sway bar links I realized it's just the way it is. There are basically two, small ball joints for the front links and they have to hold up a heavy beast of an SUV in the turns to keep the thing from rolling. The clunk there seems to be related to the ball joint reaching the end of its "give" and is more prevalent in sharp quick motions like driveway curb joints at higher-than-crawl speeds.

Again, this is my guess based on the clunk you are mentioning but not having the TRD/Bilstein coil-overs.

Follow-up: I just happened to check on my front sway bar links and noticed that I can easily move the driver side one by hand with minimal resistance. These links give out so quickly! I have put in a fair amount of off-road articulation on these sway bars though...time to look for quick disconnect links!

My TRD Pro just arrived to the dealer today after a delay at the port. I did not have many details but was just told there was a delay on some TRD parts. I went to check it out this evening before I can pick it up tomorrow but did look at the suspension after reading all about the clunk issue here. It has this same ptr13-89160 part number. Really hoping this has addressed the problem!

Hello all TRD Pro clunk havers...I made some big progress with Toyota and my FTS today with regards to the clunk issue.



Mine is going in the 3rd week of June for a day (first available date the FTS had) but when it comes back out, the clunk should be fixed.

Actually, per Toyota, it WILL be fixed.



Sorry to dangle that carrot out there, but the fix is coming, rest assured.
