Warning: Do not use Rustoleum Flexidip on rear garnish area! Wrecked the plastic

I'm pretty sure the aerosol chemical in the can destroyed the garnish on my rear trunk area. I bought it because it was right next to flexidip at HD and it was grey in color. I wanted to match the "TOYOTA" grey lettering in the front of my TRDP. Not sure if plastidip will do the same but I haven't heard of anyone complaining about plastidip.

As you can see in between each letter theres something that looks liks orange peel cracks chipping whatever you want to call it.. parts of the plastic pulled away and chipped the top layer.

The only option I have now is either:
1) Replace the garnish area. No idea on the cost of this but I'm sure its not cheap!
2) I can just plastidip the entire area black emblem and garnish.

2.5) Debadge - black plastidip the garnish and then reinstall the emblems.

I'm looking at the repair manual but I dont have a clear understanding if the the center Toyota logo is just adhesive or is it also screwed in place. I would like to remove the emblems and just paint the garnish black and with the emblems off paint them grey then reinstall. Does anyone know?

the rear toyota emblem and "4runner" are just adhesive. post pics of what you did. I'm somewhat confused by your post.

I masked off most of the trunk area but didnt get into all the crevices thinking i can just peel the unwanted areas away. Boy was I wrong. Flexidip is a lot harder to peel away, it doesnt stay together to pull away like plastidip.

I was only wanting to paint the toyota logo and 4runner grey and leave the panel black.

Had the same issue with the Red FlexiDip

Tried using it on the front TRD Pro grill garnish and it ran initially and then it took the paint of the letters. That was a week long fix. Geezzz. Beware of FlexiDip!

Just stating the obvious, ...why would you use a paint product from Home Depot on a $40k vehicle? Most cities have auto paint suppliers that can get you fixed up with correct products that work with the different plastics on vehicles, and can even put it in a can for you. Not all plastic pieces are the same either, therefore require different finishing systems.

I would de-badge then make smooth by a combination of sanding with proper paper and spraying auto primer designed for that type of plastic. Once you got it smooth again, apply the proper topcoat, then never worry about it again.

Lots of people use PlastiDip with no ill effects. The reason people use it is it's fairly durable, requires very little prep work, and is easily reversible compared to paint.

hmm, no problems on my end, could you have scratched the garnish working to remove the flexidip? it is a job removing it from the garnish. you can see I had a bit of a time from the "scratches" on the garnish. I did just use a toothpick so just some minor marring on the garnish. I decided to just leave the flexidip within the Toyota logo. I hate the chrome so much I even flexidipped the chrome keyhole.

You can get the garnish, the Toyota oval, and the 4Runner letters for about $150 total. The garnish alone is around $115.

What are the benefits of plastic dipping? I have yet to see a clean and professional plastic dipping. I see a lot young kids driving Civics and Integras do this artwork. It must be a fashion statement.

It's a cheap way to get rid of that gaudy chrome and it's completely reversible if you don't like it
