WFO9 Supercharger Install and results thread

Yikes! That is a long time with no ECU. I hope that wasn’t your daily driver!
No, it's not my only vehicle.. I would not have done the pilot program if it was. There were unexpected issues with the 2010-2012 pre air injection ECUs (I think that was the cutoff). That is exactly why they did a pilot program and is pretty much what I signed up for, the wait was still painful though. Glad it is almost over and hoping the rest goes smooth with no issues, but we will just have to see once it is up and running again.

Don't think this has been touched on yet in either this thread or the original thread.... and if it has I apologize!

Assuming this kit were available to the public now, would you (or Magnuson, I suppose) recommend a certain break-in period on a brand new Runner before installation? If so, what are we talking, 1k miles? 3-5k? 10? 30?? Or, do you think it would OK to slap it on right from the get-go?

Can't wait to see the results and hear your feedback!

It's ALIVE!!!!!!!

First impressions...

- Way more power...
- Drives smooth and does not feel like it is straining
- Can't even hear the blower until you really get on it.
- 2-3psi at med throttle around 2500 RPMs with hardy anything noticed but more torque.
- truck is actually quieter at idle.. guess the blower hides some of the top end noise it made before

I need more seat time before I can give a full review, but it feels like 35-40% more power overall. Only had an hour in it tonight and still need to hook up my gauge to get RPM along with boost and AFR logged (it's getting boost and AFR now). Saw just under 7psi at times. Mostly around 6.x

Still felt it holding back from a dig, but that is probably my exh rattle causing KR or just the torque mgt kicking in. I'm guessing they don't disable that to help hold the drivetrain together, because I'm sure it would roast the tires... otherwise. From a 15mph roll it will lift the front end to full droop and pin you back pretty good. So much so, that it is hard to see the road. Some of this is my gears too...

Here is my first time to get into any boost at all. Not really WOT, but I let it downshift at about 45mph and make some boost. This was literally my first time to get into any boost, so I was being careful. I'll have some more video and impressions coming soon.

Just wanted to get something out since it has been such a long wait. Look for some off-road action videos next week.

making me want to go mash on it now with the gears almost broken in. Super pumped for you and cant wait to hear and see all that you do with it.

Here is a little bit of data from last night.

Interesting observation is that the truck seems to run at 14.3:1 in closed loop. I noticed a similar Lambda number when I checked the FJ via TIS.

My WB is reading right after the cat, but if anything it would read a tad leaner than actual.

If these things really run at 14.3:1.. it explains a lot. Strange for sure in terms of fuel economy. All my others vehicles with WBs stuck it at 14.7 or even drifted the boundary more often lean. I will say this truck seems to lock it in with almost no movement... Makes sense.. not having a narrow band to deal with for feedback.

Anyway, I will be verifying all this with the factory readings soon and hopefully finding the RPM signal.. and see what type of data rates I can get off the CAN bus.

This is really exciting. Thanks for the the update and info. Looking forward to getting one of these under the hood and to future performance updates.

Looks like you installed the AEM AFR and you are using the scanguage II(i think?). Would you recommend these for your average joe installing in December or no?

The display in the middle is called and Ultragauge. I've had it for a while to track things like trans temp and corrected speed.... The WB and boost gauge.. are totally optional (and yes it is an AEM failsafe gauge). None of it should be required in any way. I just like to have data myself and since this was pilot.. I wanted a bit more insight. The avg user should just be able to drive it and forget about it.

Thanks for the heads up on this. You and THESS sold me on it. I still need to coordinate our schedules and get a ride in his (He lives not far from me).

Any chance of explaining this in child mode?

it's nothing more than a small timeline of Air fuel ratio on top, and boost on the bottom.

It's not that useful overall, but you can see as boost got to about 4psi AFR dropped close to ~11. Then rose closer to high 11s as boost hung around 6psi. Toward the end boost approached 7psi and AFR dropped even more, but I'm guessing this is right when I let off. You will see AFR go very lean at then end when boost goes to 0, but that is because the ECU switched to decel with the foot off the gas completely. It proves nothing more than that the tune is very safe and there is plenty of fuel.

I hope to at least get RPM logging over the weekend which will make the graph much more useful. End goal I would like to see If I can get speed, timing and other samples in it, but this could be challenging.

You mention lambda but show AFR. Are you using ethanol free gas?

I don't understand your question as it relates to ethanol..exactly. Of course I'm running 93 octane pump gas that has up to 10% ethanol in it..

The reason I said Lambda.. is that is what TIS reports with no conversion. My WB is displaying Lambda as gasoline AFR. So 14.7 is 1.0 Lambda... The fuel being run has no impact either way... it's all relative to the scale being displayed. All wide bands measure lambda.. I just like thinking in the gasoline scale since it is what I have always used.

Quick report after driving to and from work today.

This thing straight up hauls ass now even with 34" tires....

Most impressive is the fact that it can make 3psi of boost at 2500 RPMs or so in 5th gear and still not unlock the converter or downshift. So it climbs right up most hills with ease. Hard to keep your foot out of it since it just wants to scream... I'm very impressed and it really turns the truck into a different animal.

I'm still trying to figure out when the bypass shuts vs not. You can clearly feel it (and see it on the boost gauge), but its not 100% consistent depending on the transmission behavior. If there is a downshift or the TC unlocks. the motor will take in more air (creating a vacuum) as the RPMs go up and sometimes the bypass will open back up some requiring more throttle to get boost again. Other times it will start making boost at part throttle and it feels like a big V8 without needing RPM. Obviously, it is consistent when you really open up the throttle, but that always results in a downshift and all out screaming.... I'm just talking about part throttle behavior.

My mpg is horrible on the DIC, because I can't keep my foot out of it. But I did try to drive steady state at 70mph for a while and it reported as slightly better than what I typically get in the same conditions.

That's really nice to see. I was wondering if it would have some of the lean issues associated with the BD tuner used on the Tacoma and Fj's. Looks like the they hit a home run on this one with the tuning. PS thanks for sharing all the extra info looks like I might be installing a charger on my Runner.

will get this after the beta phase is over! thank you for all your hard work. Hopefully all that input on the installs that the pilot tester give, will make this thing a walk in the park for everyone else.

Any idea what the overall cost of the kit is?
