WFO9 Supercharger Install and results thread

UPDATE!: Just got a msg back from Magnuson via the Facebook. Turns out its going to be $5695 and will be released in December. Also, its optimized to work with the factory exhaust.

I read that to mean the factory exhaust is not a choke point. Good news.

A very interesting thread. I wonder what affect adding this kind of power to the truck has on it's various parts. Like, does the increased compression shorten engine gasket or piston ring life? Does different oil need to be used? Are any of the drive train joints hurt by the additional power? Does this affect emission controls or the catalytic converter? Should the brakes be upgraded to accommodate the faster acceleration?

I ask because I've always thought that a vehicle design is pretty well calibrated together. So, for instance, the drive train components would be designed to support a specific range of HP, and changing that would have an affect on them.

I like the idea of more power in my 2017 LTD, but these vehicles are really rolling computers these days, so any mods to the engine would require a change to the vehicle software, which puts you on a fork of the original software. Which means, I think, that you're on your own for future updates, since Toyota can't guarantee compatibility of their updates with code from Magnuson. Is that right?

And maybe I'm just overthinking this. But, dang, the extra power would be nice.

Great job with this.

Like any mod, be it cutting the bumpers, adding balls out suspension parts, adding 1/2 ton of accessories, stickers and other bits to your rig, its all in the spirit of getting it to be the way you want it. All or none of it should be considered good for any owner other than oneself, and damn the rest, including the factory. I admire anyone who can afford this upgrade because it is rad. And it has a warranty, so the Magnusen folks who birthed it are pretty confident that it doesn't suck. Its probable that most of the rock crawling, body and frame cutting, over revving in the mud, high altitude trailering and 4WD wear will beat your rig down more than this, so if you can afford it, I tip my hat to you and cant wait to hear about your exploits with the magical beast that you have at hand. Cheers. (And yes, you guessed it, I'm jealous.)

I just wanted to chime in and say how cool this is. Since I have been on the forum, the supercharger has been a talked up and mocked item, and now it seems there will be one available.

I doubt I will have the funds for one, lol, but I would love to see one at a car show or something, maybe even ride in it to feel how much different the power is.

This thread should be a sticky or something, it is a milestone for the 5th gen.

A sticky that 1engineer is constantly tagged in. I remember that last thread where we basically confirmed that it was (actually) happening soon, and it got shut down like all the rest of them.

Congrats on getting this thing installed, wish I could do the same.

Quick update. Been trying to learn how to log data at a decent data rate with TIS and have made progress, but running into a lot of confusing data points. Not sure what to believe since my WB... conflicts with what it is saying. They may have some artificial limits built in to the lambda readings.... Unfortunately, there is very few resources I can find to help. So it will take some time and experimentation to get clarity.

Spending more time with the truck... finding some oddities in the lower gears Think it is torque mgt, but there may be some issue with the tune. It only happens with very spirited driving in the lower gears. Just need some time to figure it out and get more data points.

How’s the throttle response with the new map?

Thank you for the detailed post and for being the brave one to be a test mule. If I missed this info I apologize, did you have to change out the plugs to a lower temp plug?
Please keep posting your impressions and data. Supercharging the 5th gen has been long overdue. I am glad a quality company like Magnison has taking up the task!

Thanks again
KS

Maybe see if disabling the traction control helps any. I know with the SC'd Tundras, the traction control and torque management seem to really interrupt things a lot. Maybe Magnuson needs to tone those down a bit, if possible.

This is correct. Even with the Auburn LSD in my S/c tundra I still turn off the nannies every single time I get into it.

I don't think it is traction control as turning that off does not seem to resolve it. There is something going on with the tune in first (and maybe... second gear). It runs fanatic in the higher gears (like what you can simulate on a dyno), but there is some type of enrichment or torque management issue in first. I'm going to send some logs to magnuson and see if we can get to the bottom of it. It only comes into play when really getting on it... but you should be able to do that if desired.

I scanned a friends stock truck and it does something similar in first gear, although it is not near as noticeable... the logs show it not going into fuel enrichment... and it sort of stumbles also. Then it does much better in second gear with the same MAF readings... yet a totally different demanded AFR. Strange for sure. Hopefully we can get it resolved.

I think I know what you're talking about, my 5th gen does this as well. Drives me nuts! I'll see if I can find some time to data log for you this week, I've been wanting to know what it's doing during this time as well.

I was sure hoping Magnuson would've smoothed that out in their tune.

It's still too early - and I don't have a way to data log or I'd give it a shot - but I suspect you need someone who has ice or snowy roads to do the same test where traction is very limited. I think you might get some odd torque management kick in. I've noticed something that seems comparable to what you're describing when trying shenanigans in the snow. Like high speed drifting in 2wd. What I've noticed is that it only happens in 2wd. In 4wd with traction control off - I can drift like a champ. In 2wd it doesn't want to let me.

A few additional data points.

Compared my scans to a stock truck...in terms of MAF readings.

I see 270 gm/s on the maf near redline
Stock 190 gm/s
That matches up with a ~35-40 % increase in HP

Also. at 4,500 RPMs I'm seeing 210gm/s
stock is 160 gm/s.

Had a chance to talk to Magnuson at the SEMA Auto Show this past week, the rep said a stock 4.0 was dynoed at 250, increased to 336 hp with the supercharger. Can’t remember the torque numbers. Pretty awesome group of guys.

Supercharger

Those are awesome numbers from the guys at sema, been following this thread and look forward to some real world data once they get it dialed in completely. This will be a future upgrade for sure.

The oil comes from the PCV and it is really not a big deal, but does kill octane and I wanted to start fresh and clean. My truck also spends a lot of time in very dusty conditions offroad, so it was extra nasty. I hope the snorkel will help with the dust ingestion. My guess is most would look bad in there...

Maybe a dumb question --- what did you use to clean it?
