I like the bag and set up. But if your buddy need to read the book on map reading he's is likely in a shitty situation that precious time could cost him his life.
Land navigation is a skill that can be studied in a book but needs to be practiced in real life before your life depends on it. Then at least once a year navigate with a map and compass to maintain your skills.
I would ditch the map reading book and get a edible plants food book instead. Make sure it has good color pictures and descriptions.

Just my own opinion. And it's usually wrong.
