Yet another liftgate struct thread

I went through the liftgate strut threads and couldn't find the answer to my question, maybe I just missed it but in any case...

Which strut has the most lifting power?

I need it to hold the liftgate open after adding a ladder, screwdriver antenna, sound deadening, heavier speakers, a small turkey, a leg of lamb and oh yea, almost forgot, a York peppermint pattie.

Hey Grant,
Remember F=PA. You need a bigger A or a P to get a bigger F which is what you need to hold up additional mass.
Oh, F is force, P is pressure and A is area of cylinder.

So, back to my original question, who's liftgate strut has the most lifting power? I know that stock won't cut it. Even if they can lift it, they won't last long with the extra weight.

So far I think we only found three: OEM, GOBI and LIFT SUPPORT DEPOT. I would call GOBI and ask what theirs are rated at to see if they are more that LIFT SUPPORT which are Force = 244 lbs, Nitrogen Force = 1085M

I have the ones from GOBI but have no clue where they are made or its rating. All I know is that even after a few months with the ladder they are damn strong.

I think you ought to buy one of each and perform some tests to determine which one truly will lift the heavier loads.

Well Gobi's response isn't very helpful.

" The lifting force is a little over the OEM specs and I’m not sure what that is as we order them directly from the manufacturer. Sorry I can’t be of any help in this matter."

No doubt Gobi buys theirs from Lift Support Depot for $40 then puts their sticker on em and sells them for the outrageous $$$ they charge. Buy them from Lift Support Depot!

Anyways, you'll need to know all the spec's for it. I've ordered a couple struts thru my old job for a liftgate style application. They're also a great resource for anything mechanical as their online catalog is one of the most extensive and user friendly designs I've seen.

In Canada, we just use hockey sticks to keep it propped up. Duct tape optional.
