Afe is here!

A CAI on our 4Runner will add nothing but a different sound and maybe a little easier access to the filter. It will not add horsepower nor will it increase fuel efficiency. Your 4Runner gets plenty of "cold air" now through the stock air filter. Think about it: What actually determines how much air is mixed with the fuel? The answer for those of you who really do not know is electronics. The ECU uses data from sensors that control mechanical actuators that allow precise amounts of air into the closed system. No matter how much air is available to mix unless you want to make lots more changes then the ECU will only use what it has been programmed to use. There are engines that a CAI can give you a small increase in HP. The 4Runner is not one.

Do you guys think that if a CAI added horsepower and increased fuel efficiency that Toyota would not put it on stock? Those guys spend millions to get tenths of a percent better efficiency and horsepower to raise CAFE numbers.

If you are gonna buy one buy it for what it really does on a 4Runner. Change intake noise.

Best Price yet...

Okay, for anyone still looking for the best price, I just purchased mine shipped for $286.88 from AutoAnything.com. Now, it was my first visit and I used the WELCOME15 promo code for 15% off and that is how it was cheaper than CPTWHOLESALE. They were willing to beat CPTWHOLESALE by a dollar, but not apply the 15%. I just went with the discount and saved the extra $15.

Also, I called AFE about which filter media would be best. I live in Tucson, AZ, so it is dusty regardless of type of driving. He informed me that if I didn't plan on doing any hardcore off-roading that the ProDry S was the best filter for me. He said it's about a 10% power reduction when going the the 7R and the 5R offers the least protection with the most upkeep. I went with the Dry S. Hope this helps anyone waiting to pull the trigger.

the strange thing is that the picture above is from the 4Runner Accessories section of the Toyota site, but you'll notice that the engine is clearly a 5.7—not the 4Runner 4.0...

the CAI pictured in the 4Runner Accessories is apparently, in fact, the TRD CAI for the Sequoia shown above.

now how comes they gets the cone filter in the way more easily accessibled airbox? :shrug:

You bring up valid points and it's my mistake to say "No increase in horsepower." I should have said "Little if any increase in horsepower." I neglected to include a density increase in air at different temperatures. I checked the air density temp tables and there is of course a difference in density between say, 80 degree air temp and 90 degree temp. It is small but an increase. I have a question: How many people notice a power increase in the morning when it is 65 degrees going to work and a decrease in the evening going home when the temperature is 80?

Even though TRD is in the business of selling performance parts I am sure they are telling the truth. How much HP gain from air density delta due to temp? 10? 5? 2? 1/2? 1/10? I do not doubt there is an increase as measured by a dyno. How much is the question. I stand corrected and thanks for keeping me honest!
 
Coming from FI vehicles where the intake can and will hold you back, it is hard to shake the "need" of an intake. My biggest concern would be MAF scaling causing knock unless it was scaled correctly. If the internal diameter of the pipe changes in even the slightest it can throw things off.
 
I just emailed aFe about the Pro Guard 7 filter. If it cleans better than that can be my justification seeing as how at least one weekend a month in the winter is in the dusty desert of Superior. I have not seen an issue with the stock box and an aFe filter, but I have also not sent in an UOA for silicon levels. I would think that the extra layers would mean more restriction, but if it maintained stock performance levels but protected better then so be it. I will let you guys know what aFe says in case anyone searches for this later.

I had my intake apart in order to maneuver around my engine bay a little easier a few months ago and noticed my AFE intake tube was starting to bend where it meets the air box and also where it meets the throttle body. With the sleeves I'm not seeing there being any danger of air going to the throttle body and by passing the filter I just wanted to let you guys know as a heads up to look out for this. Does this mean that I tightened it way too tightly?

Mine has done almost the same thing in the same spot twice now. The first time, the rubber/plasticadapter attached to the box simply ripped in half, causing me to suck dirt into the engine. I contacted AFE every day for a week and got nowhere. I finally contacted the vendor that sold the part for AFE and told them I was pissed because AFE was ignoring me and my vehicle was disabled. I got a call within an hour and they sent me the replacement part free of charge. I just noticed today that the part is about to snap off again. The alignment of the the parts is just horrible. I told the AFE tech I spoke to about it, and he said it was the first he heard of the issue (sounded like BS). Although I like the deep grumble the AFE intake produces when the throttle is open, I'm pretty disappointed in the quality of the design. The parts don't line up, and there's no play in the bolts attaching the box to the body, so there's no way to fix it.

If it gets any worse I'll probably just throw the stock intake back on. Say goodbye to the sound (and the 10hp/15ft-lbs!!!! jkjkjk)

Please let us know what AFE/Autoanything says. I was looking to purchase this real soon but if there is a flaw in the design I think I will hold off until they can address the issue.

Any other AFE owners with the same issues or are these the only 2 isolated incidences?

I got a response from AFE first thing this morning. They are sending me a new intake tube free of charge :)

I wonder if it would help you guys to upgrade the couplings to something with a little more play like this? That is if it does not already come with this kind...

afe versus trd...

I have to say that in my experience, the TRD cold air intake set-up was less than good...
The red rubber (TPE?) elbows turned to goo and deteriorated to an almost useless state after 50,000 miles.
Anyone had the AFE for more than a few thousand miles?
