Afe is here!

airwolf, which model # did you go with? afe has 3 model #... don't know the specs, sorry. btw, looks great! any thoughts on repacing the oem exhaust? thanx again.
 
I believe it's 51-81932, the Pro Dry S.
Exhaust is next, but just doing the muffler, Magnaflow 12586. That's next week, already have it, just need to make the time to get to the shop!

That is a good call just doing the muffler. Our exhaust is fine with the exception of the y pipe. I dont see any reason to do a full cat back, just replacing the muffler is definitely the right way to go.

I would however in the future look at the y pipe. Not only is it way restrictive but it just hangs so low. It is actually the lowest part of the truck! I had mine redone for like $200-$250 and I am very happy with it. It flows much better and no is tucked up above the crossmember so I dont have to worry about catching it on a rock :)
 
feelin any gain from the cai & exhaust or ... ? i honestly want to wait to hear the review on both system before i pull the trigger. i know it's a truck, but still. (hint hint airwolf..lol):cheers:
 
Plus 1 on the performance review after some drive time.
Also, has anyone looked at the throttle body spacers aFe makes for our runners? Anyone done this or have any negative to persuade me away from them?

Your ECU will compensate for it and eventually make it do nothing from what I understand. On carbed vehicles they were great, but when you get electronics inlvolved they really do not do much of anything for you.

I agree. I have no experience with them but have heard that they are a waste of money.
 
Installed my aFe yesterday and like Airwolf, I am very pleased with the fit and finish of the unit. Install was simple and it fit really well.

Upon first drive I feel that it has increased throttle response. I am sure that I gained some power, but butt dyno didnt notice anything crazy. It is a little louder than before.

I am putting my aFe flat filter up for sale in the classified section if anyone is interested.

I also ordered a Sprint Booster. It should be here next week. I have always been interested in it and read some reviews of it over on the FJ forum. Everyone over there seemed to be very happy with the results. It does not provide any additional power, just makes getting the power we already have a little easier :) I will post some comments about it once I get it installed. It is pricey for a little black box, but hopefully I will be just as happy as everyone else with it. I will keep you all posted.
 
I had the K&N on my FJ and it was a great product. Every 6 months, use the cleaner, hose it off, let it dry and re-oil it lightly.
 
Other than the "impression" that the aFe makes things better, is there any substantial evidence to support the cost? For example is your average mpg increased with similar driving as before? Does anybody have access to a dyno for some real measurements? Does anybody have the ability to compare this unit to the TRD one? I'm sure any and all answers will be much appreciated by everybody following this thread.

I, along with others here, share the desire to have the data to justify the purchase of this intake or any other performance enhancement. I think we need to consider the relative nature of this data with respect our personal situations or desires.

From experience with the K&N CAI in my 4th, the MPG gain was anywhere from more than 1.0, but not exceeding 1.7. I can't speak to specific HP gain, but its there. Someone else can do the math on the economics here.

In my opinion, an intake is the best performance enhancement for the dollar.

I've enjoyed the benefits of this addition for over a year now until the recent addition of larger Duratracs. Don't get me wrong, they're the best, but I'm now giving up at least 2.0 MPG.

Therein lies the rub. When I'm done with my other outfitting plans, I'll pine for 16.7 MPG.
 
If folks with the various Cai mods could make a video with audio so everyone can hear the difference that's so often talked about it might be a welcome thing. It's a common thing on motorcycle forums for people to record and post the sound of their tuning mods.

Besides the obvious benefit of increased airflow i'm curious about the improved sound reports. That not a request to OP or anything - just a "nice to have"..

Though I'd really love if they made a supercharger for our V6.. I'd be all over that!

According to the URD website, it's a 10 hp and 15lb/ft and 30% increase in air flow over the stock unit. Since they build aftermarket superchargers, it's safe bet that they have had it on a dynometer to verify the increase, but I couldn't tell you if they measured at the wheel or with the engine in a stand. A MPG increase is not claimed at all.

My only question is: Does it whistle like the TRD?

It looks like they simply copied and pasted from aFe's own website. I've heard that Gadget is a great guy, but I doubt that URD had anything on the dyno to confirm aFe's own claims.
