Battery Replacement

I have seen many posts about the need for a voltage booster to keep the AGM batteries fully charged. I checked mine after it had not been started for a week in the cold and my AGM charger showed it as still being at full charge. IMO, our charging system appears to take care of it.

it depends on the battery, some batteries require a higher voltage than the stock charging system for charging so without doing anything you can't fully charge which will eventually cause sulfation which will reduce the life and capacity of the battery.

Just check the specs for whatever battery you use

You can't go wrong with Interstate. I've had good luck with them and have been using them for years on all my vehicles.

I had tried Die Hard Gold on my old Chevy truck I had when I was a kid, and after 2 warranty replacements I switched to an Interstate Megatron and had no more problems. That sold me on them.

I have had really good luck with Sears Die Hard and Northstar batteries.
I've never tried Interstate or Costco.

Watch the for the delivery truck at your local Battery X-Change. They unload a pallet of blank sided black batteries and an envelope full of stickers.

Store manager just slaps whatever sticker he wants on the side of any blank one. If they run low on premium batteries that week they just order more premium stickers the following week. (Don't ask me how I know this)

I wouldn't put it past half of these boutique battery shops to do the same. Stick with a name brand and you should be just fine no matter what.

I don't know what battery x-change is but that definitely doesnt happen at any auto parts store i'm familiar with or "boutique" battery shops like batteries plus that i'm aware of

There are only a few Lead Acid Battery manufacturers.....most batteries are just re-labeled from one of these makers. Don't waste your money on a ''Premium'' battery.

There is definitely quality differences with premium batteries, and you may also want one made in the US for environmental, worker safety, or economic reasons so it's important to know who makes your battery

Well, I stuffed a 31M in mine. I have no clue what the OEM Panasonic was I took out. I could measure it if you like to try and narrow it down.

Battery

Diehard? If you see me in a Sears store, call the police. I've been kidnapped. :lookout:

I found service at the Sears Service Center to be lacking anything that resembles service.

Nobody said to let them touch your truck.
Order online and do in store pickup and install it yourself.

They hate it because the lose the up-sell opportunity, The free battery service is only a gimmick to sell you other crap. We don't need no sticking crap.

But who cares if they like it or not.

Again, why pay for the Die-Hard when it is the same battery at Walmart and Autozone for less?........because they are charging you for the warranty extension and for the advertising costs.

A Tad off topic but was wondering if anyone uses those jump start power packs and has had experience with them. Some get pretty positive reviews. Was thinking of getting one for emergency back up power. Also curious how long they might hold a charge being stored in a car subject to hot/cold temp swings. Even a new battery can fail at a bad time.
Pros/Cons?

I bought one from Costco. It's on the large size, but it works great and adds peace of mine every time I take the 3rd Gen out.
My 5th Gen has a dual battery setup so I never take it out when I'm driving that rig

The small lithium ion power packs are only designed to help a weak battery. Probably good for 75-80% of situations where you find yourself stranded in the parking lot the supermarket. No good for the dead as doornail situation. They are helpful to have for charging phones on camping trips. They work excellent for hybrids that have a small weak 12v system.
IMO the capacity ratings on these can be exaggerated about 5-10x. (18,000mAh rated uses an 1800mAh 3s battery).
On the plus side, a charge should hold at least 6 mos.
The bigger gel cell battery jumper systems will probably have more power but will need a maintenance charge every 1-2 mos max. IMO. Also a gel cell won’t last more than a couple years. YMmV. Differing opinions are welcome.

when i bought my new 31m battery, i intentionally discharged my factory battery to test out my jump pack. The NOCO GB40 didn't immediately start the vehicle, but i left it on for maybe 30 seconds and the truck started no problem. You can also find people starting vehicles with just the jump pack and no battery even installed. I also used it to start a Silverado at worked that had been sitting for awhile with a fully dead battery, same thing just left it connected for a bit then the truck started up.

Just make sure you get a quality one and not a fake knockoff (knockoffs are a big problem for Antigravity, only buy those direct from Antigravity and not on Amazon or other retailers) or a cheap chinese no-name brand that you can't trust the ratings.
