Building the Black Pearl...

wow, yea, you could always an Eastwood or POR 15 product to stop the rust.

It's only really minor surface. I'm going to clean it up, then get it all sealed up by painting it. I don't think it'll give me any issues after that. They've only been in 3 months.

So the rig has been sitting for almost a whole month. I have been waiting to get all the armor off and get the truck looked at. As you can see from all the oil on the underside of the armor, its leaking pretty good. I don't know if its the rear main seal, if its the oil pan, or if its a combination of the two. I think it is the combination of the two. Not only was I lucky enough to find the CV boot ripped as well, but I see there is a leak at the thermostat cap. I am finally going to have to bite the bullets and have the timing belts/water pump done, as well as the rear main seal, and have the oil pan re-sealed.

So it begs a couple questions from me, what is the best way to reboot the half shafts? I am going to do both of them since the one is torn, who knows when the other 3 will go.

Any thoughts on where to go from here?

At least the oil on the skids keeps the rust away!

Yeah, I'm going to get it under the knife this week. I need to figure out which timing belt kit on Amazon is the OEM one so I can get it ordered. At least there won't be any minor repairs left except the new coils it needs.

Well I ordered the 52 piece kit timing belt kit off Amazon.....it ships from Toyolex Parts Connection. I called the guy on the phone, and talked to him, it seems like he had a genuine understanding of what OEM parts are. So I went ahead and ordered it from Amazon. Went ahead and ordered the Toyota red SLLC too, and I have the Napa CV axles sitting in the rig waiting to get put on.

On the docket....once it gets here, I will drop it off to this reputable mechanic in the area, and let him have at it.

Well I picked it up from the shop today. I was very excited to get it back, and as soon as I get the skids back on, I WILL be driving it everyday again. Think I am going to take it to tint tomorrow, its starting to get hot. The only thing that I really need is the timing belt change sticker. So on to the list of what was done to the truck. at the 250,413 miles

Timing belt kit with water pump and thermostat.
New plugs, and wires.
Rear main seal, it was leaking pretty good.
2 new NAPA CV axles
New head gaskets
ALL the fluids were changed

I really can't think of anything else but that pretty much covers it I think. Its almost like driving a new truck.

As soon as income taxes get here I will order the coilovers up front, and I will be ordering the stuff I need for the HID retrofit. Hopefully the wife and I can get it to Colorado this year on some trails.

Help....what part # is this?

So I got my rig back from getting the rear main seal done, as well as the timing belt and water pump. But te rubber boot where the shifter comes through the floor ripped out. Can anyone tell me what the part number is?

Got the boot put in over the transfer case shifter underneath the shifter plate. Little bit of a pita, and then I realize that I "lost" the plug for the clock behind the dash when I had the whole thing out. Oh well, got the gas tank skid plate put back on....armor alone is a little difficult at times.

Need to get the rest of the skids on, order my Icon CDCV coils, and order my retrofit kit from TRS. Morimoto DS2 4.0. Does anyone know, is the TYC lenses actually clearer than the OEM glass?

Ok so here's an update. It's been a bit since anything significant has really happened around these parts.

I ordered the Icon front and rear CDCV coils and shocks, with some OMe 861's for the rear. I also received the sway bar end links from MStudt . Thanks man. Next month will see some rear storage compartment built. Finally June/July we are planning a trip to Colorado. We need some suggestions on some trails to run, where we can camp on the trail. Any help is appreciated.

Nice setup! I'm thinking of going with Icons and 861's also. What rear shocks did you get? The Icon 3rd gen 4Runner rear shocks say they are only for 0-2" of lift. You'll have a lot more lift in the rear than that with the 861's. Did you have custom length shocks made?

Sorry to barge in, but I can answer this one! I called Icon about that issue and they told me that their website was incorrect, and those shocks are meant for 0-3" of lift.

I'm going to run the 4th gen rears, they are a little bit longer and will make up the difference. I know a few other people that run them, with great success, so that's what I have decided to do as well. It fits where I think this rig is going.

Thanks for the reply. I've heard about others using the 4th gen shocks too. Are they a direct bolt-on? I thought I had heard that the bushings needed to be replaced with 3rd gen bushings?

I was told they are a direct bolt in. I just ordered mine last week, feel free to hold off till I get mine. I'll report in about the whole bolt in process if you'd like.

Look what came in today!!!!! Springs should be here tomorrow....then we just wait on the front coils to get here. I'm so stoked, really shocked at the size of the remote resi. There is my 30 oz yeti for comparison.
