Cleaning the blower fan write-up

I had to park my rig in the shop for most of a year, but took it out for a drive now and then to keep everything loose. Turned the AC on the other day to check it and heard the noise when I turned the fan up past the 1st setting. Took it apart today to see why...mouse family had moved in! All cleaned up now. Thanks for all the pics and advice!

So after reading this thread, it seems the way to remove the fan is to apply ALOT of even, steady force to yank it out?

Does anyone have more pics of what the motor looks like with the fan removed? More specifically, are the bearings serviceable in addition to the brushes? My blower is starting to make chirping noises, so I'd like to be able to get some grease in there and extend the life.

This 4R blower looks like (or almost identical to a land cruiser 100 series- year 2000). Attached are the pictures from the cruiser.
NOTE: When I tap the shaft to disconnect it from the blower blades, The armature slide out from the bottom of the housing (see picture). I had to manually reset the copper bushing into its location, which took a good amount of time)

The felt padding has to be oiled to keep the copper bushing lubed. I am not sure what is at the top. It was in place with a sealed cap so I didn't bother to remove it, but I did add some oil to the shaft.

Finally attached a coolant bottle cap to cover the bottom of the housing. All workes well.

Spray silicon lube behind fan blades

The blade is held in with a plastic tab which sets into a notch. I am sure there is a way to screwdriver that tab back and pull on the fan to remove it. But this plastic is 20 years old so I said screw it. I shot silicon lube behind the fan come with fan facing down. Then it runs and collects on the cone tip. Then I turn it upside down which I am assuming allowed the lube to run down the shaft and lube the bearing or whatever. It quieted down the squeak and made the fan spin better. Plus cleaningblade makes rotational weight better and less friction

I took mine apart yesterday. I had a strange vibration when I pushed the A/C to the 4th speed.

I took the motor and fan down (which was easy except the electrical connector) took out some pine straw and twigs and cleaned the blades with some water and a toothbrush. I used canned air to blow out between the blade and the motor. That was it.

Put it back together and 4th speed is nice and silent now.

I have a friend at work with a 1st Gen Tacoma that had a noisy fan. I showed him where the fan motor was and had him run the fan for me. It sounded and felt like there was a significant vibration. I had heard of stuff getting stuck in the fan motor housing so I suggested he take the three screws out and see if there's any debris in the there. The fan had some paper debris and cigarette buts wedged on one side of the fan which was probably throwing the balance of the fan off. After he cleaned it out and put it back together, he had a quiet fan once again. A very simple fix.

sounds like a project for after work, I park under fir trees, and my fan has been getting loud esp in top speed, bet its packed with needles

Thanks, found box cutter razor blade in mine. Maybe from windshield repair.
Now much quieter. Easy fix.
Easy to remove glove compartment.
Easy to remove side panel, need to unscrew at least two screws from door jam first.
Third screw hardest to get at, probbaly best to take it out first so that easy screws hold unit in.

Mine is making noise. Mostly loud. Deeper pitch not high pitched.

Is there a test I can run to tell if it's the blower making that loud noise?
I can't imagine what else since it only makes it when it's running. LOL

Does replacing fix that loud noise?

im going to do this soon, as it makes a bit more noise then when I first bought it, but gonna wait till this spring when I do my taco whip mod.

No way that's going to happen. At blower 3 screws a power plug remove lower kick panel it's out.

We have had a slight mildew smell when on recirc. AC works alright, not great.

Pulled out the blower motor and the temperature sensor thingy for access and LOTS of dust, hair and some bits of plastic wrapping blocking up almost half of it.

Im spraying it down with soap and water, going to get out the vacuum and put a hose on it to suck the crud out. Ill be flushing it out misting it with bleach and rinsing it.

Sure am glad I opened it up! Going on a 12 hour drive in 100F+ temperature today

So my ac was making a horrible noise I just bought my 4runner a few weeks ago and finally got around to looking into it and look what I found!

And there is some sort of filter way up top

Did you ever figure out what the “filters” are up inside the blower assembly?
Mine are degrading and I wonder if they can be replaced.

Those aren't filters, they are just foam covered plastic doors for interior and exterior air selection.
