COB's 4Runner Timeline (Pic Heavy)

this should get featured in some magazine. imo of course.

Funny that you mention that.... I was just contacted by 4WD Toyota Owner's Magazine... looks like they're doing a feature on my truck!

Thank you and the rest of you guys... freakin awesome...

Yesterday and today:

Dash back in. This is about halfway through.

6k white LEDs from V-LEDS.com. Still gotta work out the hotspots.

The ADD was hooked up today and some kinks with some misplaced wires were figured out. My truck is now 100% a fully functional 5-speed manual with four wheel drive.

Finally got to put on that icing :P

The rear driveshaft will need to be shortened to the proper length. The slip yolk only has about 1/2 to 1/4 inch of travel currently.

I ordered a new vehicle speed sensor (VSS) gear, as the one in the truck (It does not have ABS, therefor the speed sensors in the hubs do nothing) is too small (29 tooth). The ordered gear is a 33 tooth.

Then it's time to throw the skid back on and see what this son of a beach can do. I tested 4WD on some dirt, it works great. It can't be taken to the trail until it's got the correct driveshaft. The curb I tested 4LO on today didn't really tell me much :P

I'll keep you all updated, a video will come soon!

CONGRATS DUDE! That pic says it all. I'm very impressed, btw, that there was only a couple of misplaced wires after all that you pulled/spliced/re-installed. Great work.

Lets run up pilot rock/cleghorn or something before christmas. Im out of school and down to wheel. Those would be a perfect warm up if your not use to wheeling.

BTW good work

If there is room for more let me know :) I'd like to go on an 4x4 beginner / intermediate day trip if something can be arranged.

I noticed the SoCal section is gone.

Of course hit me up if you ever are up this way. I know most wheeling is far from SD. I looked on google maps and its 238 miles one way from the high desert to san diego I would hate to see ya drive that far .

Thats why you will never catch me in corral canyon.

perhaps a trip to joshua tree then. Jamed lives about 45 N of SD I believe but 'the high desert' is apparently a lot further away.

Nice work!! If that new speedo gear doesn't work out right for you then I suggest looking into the Dakota Digital Re calibrator. I used it on my 2nd gen Tacoma when I swapped in a crawl box and Lefty t-case and it worked like a charm. Was also nice knowing if I ever regeared or went up in tire size I could fix the speedo again no problem.

It turns out that I accidentally connected the new 4WD light wire to the wrong wire, so I fixed that and we were set. Thank you dude!

:lmao: this made me laugh out loud, no joke.

Thanks Jason, I'm absolutely down, but it might have to be during winter break when I might finally have some time to myself. I have driven a ton of manuals... but driving a stick is totally different when it's your own car. I feel like I have to learn how to drive all over again. My brain still thinks there's an automatic.

I got in my mom's 4Runner and accidentally mashed the brake pedal with my left foot looking for the clutch... lol

So 5-speed wheeling is definitely gonna be interesting, hah.

That'd be sweet! Why's the socal section gone?!

I want to go as well

good stuff james- looking forward to the magazine. give the forum a shout out!!

The more, the merrier! If I can give shout outs, I'll totally mention T4R.

I guess the 2WD throne is up for grabs now..lol.

Nice work man!! :D:trophy:
Haha... so if I had the 2WD throne... does that mean I can appoint the next 2WD king? :P

Ummmmm, WINNING.
haha thanks dude!

Whens that new bumper going on? I still have dibs on your stock one!!!
I wish I could afford a new front bumper... but I won't forget you when the time comes!

Thanks for the info, man. I've been contemplating a Dakota Digital speedo calibrator since the 3.91 gear days. The VSS gear I bought is solely so the gear actually touches the output shaft, so if the speeds way off, I'll probably get a calibrator.

Great point, the speedo can be corrected any time. Thanks dude.

Hahaha, hell yeah!

Nice work man!
Thank you brother.

Today:
My Check Engine Light came on. I was scared that it was going to be something serious.

Relief! I know already! Freakin' ECU.

I took my driveshaft over to Drivelines, Inc. over here in Mission Viejo. This shop is well renowned, they've even build driveshafts for Jesse James and delivered them on TV.

This is what $180 will get you:

I put it in and immediately went to the testing grounds, AKA a 40 foot tall steep dirt hill with shrubbery and crap all over it.

First, I went as far as I could in 2WD. As soon as the rear wheels actually touched the hill, the tires spun and it was going no further.

Then, I tried out 4LO for the first time...

... well, let's just say I realized that I'd proved my point about halfway up. :lmao:

:driving: Videos and pics coming soon

I bet that put a smile on your face C.O.B... Nothing like 4wd my friend.
Not crapping on you 2wd guys since you tend to get better gas mileage than we do.
