Driving through LA new years day?

Driving from Phoenix through LA then North on I5 to Sacramento on New Years day. Any advice on times? It's about 6 hours from Phoenix to LA trying to avoid as much traffic as reasonably possible

I'd say it's pretty heavy between 12:01 AM and midnight.

I drove down on christmas day headded over the grapevine at about 7 AM and it was smooth sailing. I'm hoping I'll be going the opposite way of people and early enough in the AM if I'm in East LA about 6-7 AM

Why are you even going through LA? That will likely add 2-3 hours given the slow pace of stop and go traffic in LA.

10, 15, 395, 58, 99 to Sac.

As for the best time of day to go through LA ... the answer is pretty much never. It's always bad. Some times are worse.

That's kind of the other rout I was thinking it's about an hour longer though and way out in the middle of nowhere a lot of the way. My hope is that the time of day will give me a smooth ridemail through LA and I can go A bit faster

I drove from the San Fernando Valley to Orange this morning and there wasn't any traffic at all.Was surprised a bit because it's raining. 35mins tops. Depending on what time you are passing through, you should have any problems.

I would take Brian's advice, only time it's ok to go through LA traffic wise is 11:00-3:00am. The longer route will have much much less traffic and make up for the longer distance for sure. I would just take 15 all the way to 58, that section of 395 has a ton of stop lights and big rigs usually

By "through LA," I of course mean 10 to 210 to 5 so I won't go down town at all, I'll be staying North looks like there is a slow down on the grapevine already though hopefully Las Vegas boudoir traffic

After thinking about it a bit more, on new year's day the traffic at six am should be very very light. However by 10 or 11am it may exceed normal because everyone has the day off and are going to visit someone or buy something.

To be honest you'll be fine on either route I'll be running 26 - 5 - 99 today. I've been looking at traffic all day. Take the route the gps / nav sends you

Got home in 11 hours including three gas stops and breakfast at Starbucks! Just stayed on 10 to I5 with no slowdowns at all. The biggest issue was the heavy ass downpour in West AZ in the desert.
Hit 10-I5 junction about 6:30 AM.
