My plan is to mount up a small extinguisher, whatever I can make fit right in front of the passenger's seat, and a larger one in the back on the rollbar, thanks for the information OP, I didn't really know any of that information.

I've got my 5 lb. extinguisher in the rear cargo area, but I think I am going to grab a 2.5 lb. unit and try what you're talking about doing up front.

Most 2.5 lb. extinguishers are about as large as a coke can in diameter and maybe 12" long if you guys need to measure before buying an extinguisher.

Looks like they come filled from Amerex since there is a HazMat charge. You may try your local extinguisher company and see what they have. You'll need to find one anyway when you have it refilled and hydrotested.

One last question. Have you had any experience with H3R brand extinguishers? They seem to advertise as a performance product with prices a little higher than the Amerex.

Nope, but a quick look at the site tells me they are nothing more than rebranded Amerex extinguishers. Rebranding is fairly common in the extinguisher world, so beware of what you buy.

I also found this thread from another board I am a member of. Lots of good info and pictures specific to off road vehicles.

No sir, but looking at it tells me it is a rebranded Buckeye, which is a very poor extinguisher.

I would highly advise giving a local extinguisher company a call and seeing what they have as far as used extinguishers for both your vehicle and home.

Ok. I didn't think it would be very good because of the low price. I'll probably go down to the fire station down the road and talk with them about where to get one or two. Thanks for this writeup btw!

Amerex Brass head. Arguably as good as it gets with portable extinguishers. Steel handles. The long valve stem goes in these.

Here are the valve stems for a Buckeye. They are expensive and don't tend to seal well despite the wide rubber strip.

Much appreciation for this post. This is one of those "I'll do it eventually" "mods" that get easily overlooked. I'm barely getting into the fire service but I'm definitely seeing the world of difference it can be to have easy access to a fire extinguisher. Thanks!

Just wanted to bump this thread as a PSA for keeping a fire extinguisher in your vehicle (4Runner or any othere). Wasn't able to stop this fire from consuming the vehicle, but I was able to keep it from becoming much more massive before the fire department arrived. Be safe out there kids!

Great thread! Thank you for someone with first hand info to post things like this. Just last week leaving the refinery, there was a dodge Dakota on the side of the road totally in flames. Not sure what caused it, but something broke under his truck and fuel tank went up. Truck was toast.

I've always wanted \ needed to put one if not two Extinguishers in my 4runner (and now my daughters Jeep). I just don't know where. As stated, with a tire carrier, the back is out of the question. I like the under the back seat idea that's posted. But I still have people back there and I'm worried about it getting kicked (Is that an issue?).

I was thinking around the side back windows where it can reached (but not hit with someone's head if sitting in the back seat). I'm still looking\thinking....

Quality extinguisher. One of the best you can buy for sure. I would highly recommend that one.

Oh, never to just the plastic!!! I would take the plastic off and make a alum. backing plate to support the Extinguisher to. I did something like that with my original bumper and mounting my Light Force on it. It would end up having the plastic trim to be sandwiched between the Extinguisher Bracket and the Alum. plate.

But thanks for pointing things like that out. I just talked to a kid who drove around with his spare tire on the top of his roof with little to no support... Talk about a large mass getting launched to take off someone's head...

^ I like that. Originally, my 4runner was going to serve more as a recreational/multipurpose vehicle since I had a separate DD. But after this happened to my DD while driving on the highway on my way to work a few months ago...

...my 4runner became my new DD. Luckily it was only my car that took any damage. Don't care much to live in a bubble & b/c of that I will welcome safety advice of any kind. I've been looking into fire extinguisher options since this incident & this thread will be a big help. Solid info, thanks for taking the time to share some knowledge.


Edit: Kind of ironic but I just looked at your original post date and my car catching fire on my way to work happened about a week after you made this thread.

And mounting one or two Amerex B417 in passenger footwell, or preferably under the front of each seat

Something else to think about regarding vehicle mounted fire extinguishers is that the dry chem can pack down over time. Especially when subjected to the vibrations of traveling. At my fire house we flip our rig mounted extinguishers over every month when we date and initial the inspection cards to try and keep the dry chem from packing. I do the same on my boat and toy hauler but only seasonally.

I'm going to work on my new to me 1st gen today and will be looking for extinguisher mounting options thanks to this thread!
