LED Dash lights FAQs

Cigarette lighter light ring LED

Anyone mod the bulb in the cigarette lighter light ring to an LED? If so, I'd be interested in hearing what you did, and seeing pictures of the results.

I'm switching all my dash lights to white LED. So far the results are very nice. But the cigarette lighter is a bit is a bit of an eyesore.

Honestly, don't waist your time on cigarettes outlet. The built is built in. It cannot be removed.

I am thinking of replacing the special purpose bulb assembly with a standard bulb socket as is used above the ash try, or for the PRND12 light.
Just was wondering if anyone else had done a mod like that. If not, I may give it a whirl and let folks know how it works out.

Following along here since I just destroyed that bulb and plug attempting to get it replaced with an LED that ended up not fitting anyway.

Can't decide between pulling one from scrap and trying again or just leaving the light dead now.

Going to order some LED's for my 2000 limited...
Here it is stock, is the climate control area supposed to light up more? i.e. I can't see any of the dials or buttons in the dark. Only the air recirculation, defrost.

3 out of 4 of your climate control lights are out. Both your lights behind your ECT/ rear power window/ defrost buttons are out as well as your hazard button light.

Awesome writeup, thanks! This is high on my list of things to do when I finally find my first 4runner. It looks like a lot of the interior is similar to the Supra.

anybody have a link to the specific #194 to order for the tach, speedo, gas and temp (1998). I see on superbrightleds site they have different lumen ratings. Is there a specific one to get or a range to stay in between. I don't want it blinding me while I drive.

Was doing this LED conversion and now after putting everything back together I'm left with these two plugs in my hand. The top two are for the dimmer and the center diff lock. Anyone have any clues? Mine is a 2001 4Runner with 4x4, SR5

Thank you!

What a timesaver. Thanks so much for this.

(btw: very easy to lose the cargo area bulb if you don't have a firm grip on on it. Pushed too hard, it popped out of my fingers and is not accessible, sitting in a hollow under the roof near the receptacle. Best to use some kind of tweezers).

Anyone know if the 4x4 light in the middle between the tach and speedo should light for a 2000? When I put it in 4L or 4H a little green light lights up over on the bottom right of the dash, but the center light never lights up. I swapped it around to make sure it wasn't a polarity issue. I replaced all 3 in the dash with white led (tach, speedo and 4x4)

That light should light up if you have the center lock capability. When you switch into 4H Locked or 4 L Locked.

Oh that's right that's for the center lock, limited and 01/02. I totally forgot about that. I'm 00 SR5 so all good. Whew!

The chart is missing

Does anybody have the chart? The Photobucket link is broken. I am looking for bulbs for my 1999 4Runner.

Its my photobucket photos being locked because photobucket sucks. Here is the link for the same chart on Flickr.

A little observation I have since I had to replace my rear window switch and defroster/ECT button bulbs yesterday. The ones I got from Super Bright LEDs didn't really fit properly, and would connect intermittently, if at all. I found some VLED T3 bulbs I had forgotten I had bought, and they fit right in and twisted into place no problem. Lit up on the first try with no hassle. So VLED > Super Bright.

The real MVP right here lol. Looks like all the links/photos on the first page have been shut down, would be nice if MStudt could reupload maybe on imgur or something :thumb:

Edit: reuploaded this image to imgur just in case the above goes down

Tips From A Newbie

A few things to add from somebody who recently learned what a socket wrench is. Today I replaced the 3 dead bulbs in my dash with LED's.

* If you keep your wits about you, this is doable by a newbie. Don't be overwhelmed by the pictures. Don't pull excessively on any parts. Make sure you got all the screws and bolts first. Some of them are hidden away out of sight.
* You will have to unplug and plug the various wire sets back into the back of the dash sight unseen. You should be able to do this without issues by feeling around with your fingers. I didn't need to pull any other wire sets except what was behind the dash/ gauge cluster unit.
* The bulbs I got from superbrightleds have polarity. Before screwing everything back in, test the dash lights. I used a blanket to keep out the bright daylight. The first time I turned on the car none of the dash lights worked. I had to pull all the wire sets out from the back of the dash, and turn all the bulbs 180degrees to switch the polarity. I didn't see any markings on the bulbs.
* The LED bulbs fit into tiny green receptacles which contain the original bulbs. Don't throw these away :-).
* After you do this, you will realize that the brightness of the center console (radio, climate control, etc.) is very dull compared to your dash. Changing these to LED's is on my agenda next.

Special thanks to the OP for reposting the bulb chart.
