Mechanic put 0w-40 in my 14 trail

Went to get an oil change, took the guy forever to put my skids on (hence why I pay for an oil change). I asked if he used 0w-20 as he was supposed to and he said yes. After looking in the trash i found 7 bottles of ow-40, Mobil1s "European car formula". So as u can imagine he is redoing it with the correct stuff. However I would like to know if there will be any issues down the road as he is technically mixing the 20 with the little bit of 30 still in the engine/filter. Iv got 22k milesz anyone? This ticked me off to say he least

It takes like 3 minutes to remove everything you need to change the oil.

Just be honest and say you are too lazy or mechanically inept to do it.

It's okay. Admitting it is the first step.

I go to Wal-Mart to buy my oil and take it to the dealership to have it changed. With labor cost and an oil filter it's like $24.

I'll pay $24 to sit in a leather chair drinking cheap coffee while not rolling around on the floor in my garage, covered in oil, wondering where I am going to take the old stuff =)

First off Toyotas are pretty easy on oil (well most of them, the new Tacoma GDI engine is really darkening the oil quick; reminds me of used diesel oil almost).

But to be fair, that is a much thicker oil than what the vehicle is designed for and could cause some issues with the VVTi set-up; additionally the engine is designed for 0w-20 and the clearances are much tighter than engines that used 5w-30 or 5w-20 in the past. So in the long run it might not properly lubricate the engine.

All that being said, I wouldn't worry about getting every last drop out; as long as you get most of it out and use 0w-20 you should be fine.

Good news: you caught the issue. Bad news: having someone else change your oil makes you inept and lazy. Win some / loose some I guess. No worries, the 4Runner will continue to run without issue.

Hey I didntoo, contemplated leaving it there to get heat for. To answer all, yes i am too preoccupied and lazy to spend the time doing it myself like I used too. Toyota made it that much more difficult in the 5th gen than my 4th gen for me to feel enticed to do it myself, and like mentioned above, figure out where to dump the oil while simultaneously being concerned for the Wales that will injest my used oil should I find a quicker way to get rid of it.

Jesus take the hate somewhere else it's a forum for effs sake. Wouldn't expect you to know the added steps toyota gave us to change our oil in the 5th gen since you are driving an 85. you could probably change your oil with used cooking oil from a 100 McBurgers.

Hey don't let them get to you man. I let my dealer change my oil. Why? Because I have better, funner things to do like ride my bike lol. I used to change my oil myself until I determined it was not something I considered enjoyable anymore. Some of these guys think it's all hard and complicated and if they want it done right they must do it themselves. Newsflash: There's a reason high school kids do it and it's an entry level job. It's not that hard! I get it changed, I check their work and drive away. I have no problem if you want to do it yourself but don't rag on those of us that realize there are more enjoyable things to do.

Oh, after reading some of the things a few people here have done when working on their 4runners I will take the kid at the dealership over some of these weekend warriors. With that said I won't use anyone but my dealer lol.

lol Don't get too worked up man. As I sarcastically pointed out in the thread above, we all have different priorities. Changing your oil does not make you a "MAN" or otherwise. Paying for a change does not imply laziness or ineptitude. We all share a love of the 4Runner, and that is why we're here. It's funny, the people that didn't give you straight responses were either too lazy and / or inept to contribute something of valueybrick... Then again, this is a forum.....we get what we pay for I guess.

When I worked at Mercedes as a tech many of the techs would do just that. People would bring in their Synthetic Amsoil / Redline / Mobil 1 and the techs would just keep those bottles and fill the vehicle with whatever was in the nearest 55 gallong drum.

I let my dealer change my oil. I get it changed, I check their work and drive away.With that said I won't use anyone but my dealer lol.

I use the dealer as well and like you I have to check their work. On my last oil change I found out they only unbolted the back and side of the factory skidplate and bent it down to reach the filter.:wow:

It's funnyi that people bust balz about not changing your own oil...

I'll swap gears, build a bumper, remove and gusset the spindles, change gear oil.... heck I would even pull the motor if it needed to be done, but changing motor oil and filter is not worth my time. I'm way too lazy for that. I stop by the local lube shop and let them do it. I do remove the skid plates first and watch every move they make...

And running 0-40 vs 0-20 is not going to hurt anything....Heck, I'm sure you can run non syn without any issues. I'm not going to do it, but I seriously doubt it could cause any issues in the short term.
