ive changed my oil so many times, and the oil in other's vehicles... is this one of those "it'll grow hair on your chest..." things no one ever told me about?

i change my oil because NOBODY cares as much about my vehicle and the longevity of it as i do. Unless i poured the oil in myself i cannot guarantee whats in it. :hippie:

Wasn't there a guy on here who took his Runner in for an oil change, and the dealer forgot to put oil in completely? He drove for awhile on like 3 drops of oil.... ah here it is:

The point is not that an oil change is easy or difficult, but that it's essential to be done right. And if you want something done right.....

I go to Wal-Mart to buy my oil and take it to the dealership to have it changed. With labor cost and an oil filter it's like $24.

I'll pay $24 to sit in a leather chair drinking cheap coffee while not rolling around on the floor in my garage, covered in oil, wondering where I am going to take the old stuff =)

That mechanic takes your oil home and uses the cheap stuff in your truck.

I notice people use time as a excuse for taking to the dealer , which seems odd to me. It so quick and easy to do yourself at home , all the major auto parts chains take the used oil and will give you a credit I get air fresheners or something. I bet I can change my oil way quicker than any trip to the dealer and waiting for them to do it , how it that saving time ? People act like the dealer comes to there home and does it . But if you have to drive to dealer and wait or make an appointment Thants not much quicker overall.

Plus on the time thing , I'm at home doing my oil and other things , your at the dealer waiting and playing on you phone. How much can you really get done.

I have the local dealership change my oil for two reasons. First, I personally know and trust the lead tech who's responsible for the work. Second, my time is far too valuable. Wife, kids, bikes, and work all demand the majority of my time so any time I have free is worth the cost and then some.... Okay, I'm lazy too.

The older I get the more value I find in paying other people to do things I don't want to do. I still take pride in doing those tasks when they must be done but if I have the cash to pay someone else so I can relax or go play... arty:

If time is important it would be far quicker to do it yourself. , I bet I can change my oil before you get to the dealer and he has your truck on the rack. What do you do for the wife and kids while your at the dealer waiting and saving all that time ?

i asked a serious question. I do not want my wife going all bro on me if she does an oil change. I prefer to avoid it if the odds are above 50% that balls will drop.

I am old and can be very lazy, but I change my own oil. My T4R has not been to the dealership since I bought it. I also rotate my own tires, lube the driveshaft etc.

I have the space and the tools. I like to inspect other stuff on the truck while I am at it. Plus, every other new vehicle I have owned became hurt in some form or fashion at a dealership. I have 2 other vehicles with 175K and 140K, both bought new and both have incurred minor damage at a dealership under warrantee work.

Now if I have an issue under warrantee it will go to the dealership and I will take my chances, but I have friends who are tech's and the stories they tell amaze me. I also have friends who laugh at me for doing my own work while they are fishing / golfing.

I have no issue whether other folks do it themselves or take it somewhere. Has no bearing on anything. I am just one of those who have not had good luck.......

Of course he does. Every single time he dumps all of my oil into a new container and gives me back just about 1/2qt after filling my vehicle with "the cheap stuff". He does the same thing when I have them do my wife's car. It's a little more tricky when he does her car though because has to measure out the about 1.2qts left over in the 5qt jug.

Blackstone labs is also in on the scheme and falsified my analysis. Both times.

Someone should tell her she has a little shmutz on her arm. Also those damn I4's are both a boon for changing oil and a pain as the oil pools up in the block webbing and makes a mess under the car. If you use cheap filters you can usually pop a hole in the top and let it sit a minute two to drain back into the block; but the factory ones have really good anti-drain back protection.
