I figured I'd use the stock tray for good measure

I only had to trim the "short sides" of the tray since the 31M is about the same depth as the stock battery (31M is a little longer). And I only had to trim the lip that protrudes above the flat bottom of the tray (literally took less than a minute with a Dremel).

Zero issues - Every bit as secure/sturdy as the stock battery situation, but with oodles more power If the Stock battery mounting situation is acceptable, this will be no different IMNSHO. Just rolled over 65K yesterday - Still trucking!

Trim 5th Gen 4runner Stock Battery Tray

1. I found that the stock battery tray is really a piece of flexible plastic. You can bend it very easily. It does not really support too much due to its flex material made ! The stock battery even extends from the platform without solid support from this tray !

2. Do you mean that you trimmed both sides or just one side of the tray? Pls see pictures attached? This big monster should extend further 2-3 inches without any support from the platform below.

I trimmed both sides of the tray and centered the battery as best I could on the factory mounting plate.

You can see in my initial pic that the 31M's handle center is just slightly offset towards the passenger side (relative to the battery mounting bar).
If this concerns you, I'd avoid anything other than a stock sized battery.

Otherwise, buy a 31M, nix the plastic tray (as Jeremy556 did) or trim it (like I did), bend the "+" terminal for clearance, slightly trim the plastic factory "+" terminal cover for clearance, and you are done Enjoy those extra CCA's and oodles of reserve current

Not a single issue over more than 24 months and 60K Miles and a 4KW RMS Audio System as a "Substantial Load"

I just trimmed the inboard side of the tray with my metal shears and that was it. Why is everyone buying those battery tray on here?

Why 31 series? What's the advantage? Isn't 31 series Diehard a Marine battery?

More capacity while using the stock battery location, and without the hassle of adding a 2nd battery.

It's also an AGM type battery (Absorbent Glass Mat) which is superior to the stock "wet" battery - and that's beyond being able to deliver more current and longer reserve than the stock battery.

It might be a "Marine Battery" with deep-cycle qualities, but still offers 1150 CCA! It's a perfect hybrid of a starting battery and deep-cycle (when needed) that far exceeds the stocker.

I didn't need a higher output alternator, just more current reserves for the 4KW audio system (sensibly enjoyed with headroom or else I would need a HO Alternator!), and the DieHard 31M AGM was a perfect match - bar none...

When the time comes, it will be replaced with an identical one (probably still 3-4 years down the road)...
