Good stuff Charlie. I need about a 6" opening, and I'm leaning toward this one...

OD is oddly noted as 8 2/16". I'll take that as 8 1/8"... Taking a square to the surface, that's about the max I'd go given the contours in the panel there.

Given how much you have inspired us with all that you've done, of course.
I'm sure many have heard of the concept of idea-hopping. So, I began looking for similar or comparable items, like this.

So, I went back-out to the 4Runner, and there is not all that much flat real estate on that panel. So.... that 8" diameter (OD) looks to be about the max for something like this. Ordered the deck plate one, coming Saturday....

The deck plate I got is a tad too small for the battery to pass through it, unfortunately. So...
I'll try to remember to report back as I figure-out more. I chronicled the effort a little more in my build thread...
maybe someone with a 3d printer can make a cover for us

Would be nice, but I'm quite sure for this size opening some contouring will be involved (not uniformly flat). That's why I'm leaning toward a thin piece of sheet metal that I can shape accordingly... Or, frame it and "fill" the gap between the frame and panel, then use a perfectly flat piece over the frame. That's my current lean.
Bump for an awesome idea. Was able to fit a good chunk of my recovery in there, which was otherwise taking up space in a duffel bag!
Snuggly stowing my ARB Snatch strap, 65' winch extension, tree saver, jumper cables, and 5000lb ratchet tie-down.
you guys have to stop with the GREAT ideas for cheap mods. now i just have to do this, to give the wife and 2 80 pound dogs a little more room when we head out for a weekender.

Cargo area security
Anyone here done any mods wrt cargo area security? I live in an area where randoms will smash windows and grab stuff, which I expect from time-to-time. I'd like to keep golf clubs in the back for ease of use, and when they're in my sedan I just have the trunk locked and I have no worries. But buddies have had their windows smashed and clubs taken from the back of their rigs since they aren't locked down.
I'm thinking some kind of big dog cage or something? Or maybe something more permanent, although that would kill the fold down capability in the back.
Thoughts?

Why not get a cargo cover and window tint? Out of sight out of mind?
I keep my pet honey badger in the back whenever I've got something valuable in there.

I thought that was what the tonneau cargo cover was for. Keeps things out of sight.

To me it seems like taking them out when not in use would be way less of a headache than replacing any smashed window and the clubs or figuring out a way to secure them in there and hide them

If it helps anyone here's a couple pics from when I did mine. When the panel comes off there will be a black plastic tub attached to the panel on the inside. If I recall there are some a few heat staked connections you can cut with a razor and off it comes.

Here in Portland car thieves see that as a sign that they *should* break in. I've had friends who've kept their tonneau pulled closed as a force of habit with nothing underneath and that's why they got broken into.
It's sort of a given that your windows are gonna get tapped here eventually. I'm just lazy and want to keep my clubs in the car, but want to prevent them from getting stolen when that happens.
I'm also just considering a locking roof pod.
Yup, happens all the time in the SF bay area. You really need to just build a carpeted cargo box if you plan to leave anything of value in your truck.
