T-SB-0081-12 Headlamp Surface Oxidation

Just had mine replaced today, no issues. They knocked it out in about 3.5hrs and fixed a door ding for me for free, I even offered to pay for it when I dropped it off but when I checked out they said they took care of it for free for me. I even asked if they put the right ones on and he said they order them by my VIN so they couldn't screw them up, sucks to hear some are getting the wrong ones. Toyota of Bellvue, WA, great service department.

Had my TE in for an oil change this week and mentioned the headlights and seat crunching. New headlights were ordered without question (in next week) however they wouldn't do anything with the seat right now as they could not replicate the crunching. I showed them the TSB and they made a note of it on my file. Not too concerned as it isn't all that bad.

Had mine in for 30k service and told them neither the headlights nor the lumbar crunch had gone away since I reported them @ 25k svc. And referred them to TSBs - headlights are on backorder, seat part should be in within a few days.

I was told that dealership needed appoval for Toyota Canada to replace headlights, but at least they started the process and hopefully they'll replace mine soon. Seat crunching gone when it's colder, I was able to show them mine crunching about month ago and dealeship even ordered part as per TSB, but then they said it's a motor and rails. I don't think that new motor will fix the problems, but we'll see.

Here it is, about a year after the TSB was issued, and I had to show my service writer a printed copy of the TSB. He was very surprised and called the service manager in to see the TSB. :shrug: They had just been "buffing out" the covers. The parts are on order now for my TE and they should be changed out next week.

At the stealership as I type...heavy into negotiations to get my SR5 headlights replaced with TE ones.

I am past 36k so I have a mountain to climb with the service guy but he is a 4runner owner and friendly to the cause!

I have been using everything i have. Told them i would replace them myself, give them the old ones, yadda, yadda.

I took a printed copy of the TBS into my dealership and they ordered them no problem. They call and I schedule a time to get them done. I drop off my TE and go get some dinner. They call and say bad news. Your over 36k and we cant do them for free. Good news is we will only charge you $200 to replace them.

I tell them to park my TE and I will be there in a few to talk about this. So about 5 minutes later they call and say they have called some rep and are still trying to get them done. I tell them to just throw the new ones in my TE and I will come get it no issue. I can intall them myself.

They call back a few minutes later and say the rep gave permisson and they are installing them as we speak.

So in the end I got them replaced. I may have had empty 12ga shell casings laying all over the floorboards of my TE and a killem all let God sort it out sticker on the drivers window when I dropped it off. May have.

Replaced my TE lights yesterday. The most interesting thing to me was the offhand comment by the service writer as I left - "$800". Glad it was under warranty. I'm assuming that is what Toyota is reimbursing the dealer.

Update:

Good news is they agreed to replace my lights and I'm at 40k.

Bad news is they would not substitute trail lights for my SR5.

Oh well...at least I am getting the lights fixed!

cool... same deal for me, except I was still under warranty.. to be honest the more i see the trail headlights, the less I like them... was happy with the standards being replaced

Got mine done yesterday under warranty. I let them know that I had buffed them out twice already, and I think that really helped them "justify" the free service. They would not agree to give me TE headlights though. :dammit:

got this taken care of last week at Larry Miller Toyota here in the springs. Very friendly service and because of the trimmed bumper (for the ARB), I was in and out in no more than an hour, including the wash. This may have been mentioned somewhere in here already, but I like how the newer TE lights are completely black instead of just smoked

Got mine done on Friday. Spent about 30 mins with the guy explaining the TSB (I had it printed out). He needed to talk to his manager and rep. They all had to go take a look. They all agreed that my lights "didn't look to bad" (very noticeable). Unfortunately they couldn't argue too much when I had the TSB in hand and the issue was staring them in the face. They ordered the lights and, as I was walking out, the service manager called me over. He admitted that he had seen every 4Runner come through with similar hazing and thought something was funny (the dearlership admittedly doesnt have a lot of 4Runners come throught, mine was the first 5th gen they sold and they remember it. they also couldnt believe mine was really a LE as "the tires look different".) So they ordered my lights.

Then, when I brought the truck back to get the lights replaced the new service guy spent another 30 minutes "verifying" the service. I have 25K on my 2010 and still within the 3/36. Things were finally approved and I left. Got a call at the end of the day saying one light was broken so they could only do one.

Regardless, a bit of a hassle but things are getting fixed as they should.

Does anyone have a link to a list of the notable TSBs for for the 5th gen. I've been searching and found the lumbar one but the rest seem to be 4th gen.

I've had my truck a couple weeks and I've noticed the lumbar crunch and my headlights are hazing on the top. Need to know if there's anything else I should get fixed while I'm at it. (XM antenna isn't working all that great either.

I bought this thing certified (2010 TE). You would think they would just apply any TSBs that are already evident but I guess not.

A TSB is a Technical Service Bulletin, NOT a recall. It only comes into play if a customer complains of an issue covered by the bulletin. Bottom line, if you are not experiencing the issue covered by the bulletin within the warranty period, then you do not have an issue......be safe.

My point was that both the lumbar and headlights are noticeable and should have been fixed as part of the certification process.

Agreed.....should have been. But unless a customer complains, it will not get done. Could you not complain and have it done now?

I plan on scheduling an appointment at some point today for the antenna, lumbar, and lights. Just making sure I'm not missing anything that I don't notice now but will later.

The only other TSB which have seemed to effect a lot of the members here is the one regarding the drive shaft "Clunking". Not sure it applies to your vehicle. See attached. Be Safe.
