Three words. Flare nut wrench.

If you've already tried that and it's only becoming worse by rounding off more, just leave it alone and obtain a bolt extractor set. They can be found relatively cheaply from many different places, like Harbor Freight for example. Hopefully you have one nearby.

Extract that thing and throw on a new nut at the end.

It was stripped on the inside. Or the bolt threads were stripped. Either way, the nut wasn't coming off by turning. I cut it off with a Dremel once I had replacement parts in hand.

Hey at least you got it done so I'm happy for you about that. Dealing with stripped things is such a pain to me, I absolutely cannot stand it.

This is part technical and part judgement. For some reason my 97 4Runner has grown on me. It has grit. My son drives it as his first car. I daily drive my 5th Gen.

When we got Auzz, the idea was to restore it and use it to start teaching basic mechanics to my boys. Mods, Colorado and Utah trails and camping, etc….

Well ice and snow happened and a tree into the left rear quarter panel. How hard is it to fix something like this? Due to the age, body shops are talking about totaling it due to potential inner liner damage. I’m not a fan of trashing a perfectly running car. Body panels look to be rare and most likely will come from a used doner some where.

Mechanically he is still way strong. Before us it was a well cared for Runner.

Should I keep pushing for the professional repair, try to pull it out myself and cover it up, just give in a total it? If your in the Denver area and have knowledge of good body shops willing to restore let me know.

Disregard my last.

EDIT: But I would like to know if we in the 3rd gen community are still swearing by the red stuff or have any of us began to use the 50/50 pre-diluted stuff?
I've used both Peak and Zerex, concentrate and 50/50, in my rigs with no issues.

I like Peak red/pink from Amazon, super affordable.

Thank you for the input Mike. I may just do the 50/50 this time for the sake of ease, we'll see. I'm in no rush right now, just ideally before the hot weather sets in.

Servicing Sunroof Without Removing?

00' limited and sunroof isnt working. motors fine but roof wont move and i dont want to force it. So the next best thing is to see what kind of shape the tracks/worm drive is but i dont want to have to remove the sunroof to do so like ive seen on YT.

Is there a way to remove the moulding around the sunroof to expect and maybe clean out the tracks or something?

Biggest tire size to fit on a stock 2WD 3rd gen 4runner

Hi guys,

New guy to these forums here. I just bought my 98' evergreen pearl 4runner in January. I right now I am looking to get a new set of tires for my truck, since the ones on it right now I have no idea how old they are and my rears are essentially drag slicks right now lol. I know what tire I want (General Grabber AT/X) I am just not sure if the tire size I want will fit. I have done some looking around on some threads on here dedicated to my question but the only problem is that everyone in that thread has 4WD trucks. As far as I know, the 4WD are 1 inch higher stock than the 2WD models. On that thread everyone was saying 265/75r16 tires would fit with no issues, and that size was the biggest you could go before you have to start trimming stuff. My truck right now has 15 inch rims but I bought a set of 2nd gen Tacoma alloy wheels that are 16in for my truck. I want to get 265/75r16 tires because the tire diameter is 31.6in which is perfect. I know the 265/70r16 would work but that size is 30.6in dia. though, I want something bigger. My question is would 265/75r16's fit on my 2WD as well with no issues? If anybody has any information they could share I would much appreciate it. I'm hoping I could get away with running the 265/75's

cheers,

- Garrett H.

3 of my 4 12v outlets are not functional.

So by cargo area outlet and my two outlets that are below my ash tray are not functional, but my cigarette lighter outlet works fine. I've checked the 12v fuse under the hood, which was fine, as well as the fuse on the back of the cargo area outlet, which was Aldo intact. Any advice?

Found the issue. Its a 15amp fuse under the name PWR OUT RLY that was blown. All 12v outlets are functioning now

I would reach out to Fat Pat's Custom Body Lifts and see if he still has some. I think he has since stopped production of the body lifts he made. If I can find/remember his username I will tag him here.

I believe his username is shootmymime

Issues with the CS144 Upgrade

Hey guys. Everytime I try to put in a cs144 alternator it drains my battery like crazy. I've tried 2 alternators from AC Delco (335-1048) and they both drain the battery when off. First one was draining at 0.5 amps and then the 2nd at 1.2 amps. I did the diode check with an amp meter on both alternators and current is only going one way.

The first cs144 i tried was also charging a little high. It started at 15.2 volts and settled at around 14.85.

I'll put my stock alternator back in with the same wiring and all is good. No battery drain.

The only difference I see is the wiring harness used for the cs144. I checked if any wires were shorting out and I found nothing.

Any suggestions? Dunno what else could be causing this.

I remember ages ago there was some user trying to make their 5VZ push 400+, anybody know who that was? I'm curious how it's going for them

Nevermind. Turns out I did everything right, except that the harness i bought had two wires that were crossed! Repinned those. Now it's all good.

oil pressure light

Hello,

Has anyone ever seen an oil pressure light flicker at idling? It will happen when the RPM are down to 500-600 at idle. It seams like a low idle to me. I’ve kept an eye on the oil level and it stay consistent. No major oil leaks that I know of. I’ve seen information about cleaning the IAC, but wanted to see before I jump in.

I was removing my fenders to start tubbing and I noticed my fenders have little welds holding it to the body near the hood hinges.

I haven't read about anyone else encountering this but it looks factory.

Am I missing something obvious or can I just cut these off?

EDIT: it was just a bead of seam sealer

2002 3rd gen stuck in 4WD

Hey guys, posting for my brother who lives in Portland, OR.

He switched it into 4WD during the snow a while back and hasn't been able to get it to switch back since. He has taken it to a few shops who have quoted him various prices, all expensive, and no for certain remedies.

I am here in TN, and got him to try all the different things I can find here on the forum, but he isn't so mechanically inclined that I see him opening up the transfer case.

I am pretty sure its the transfer case motor, and those are $$$$.

So my questions are:

Does anyone know of the best shop to take it in Portland, OR?

Does anyone have a transfer case motor they'd be willing to part with or know a trick to get it to switch it back to 2WD manually?

He can try manually applying power and ground to the transfer case actuator to see if it moves. Power/ground pins will be the two larger wires at the transfer case actuator.
