5th Gen Marker Lights in Grill

Hi,

thanks for the write-up! Very helpful.

I'm currently in the process of doing the same (first time ever doing something similar) and I got a question.

I read many guides that tell how to install the lights in the fuse box in the cabin (driver side).
But I'm not sure how to connect to the OEM switch instead? All the switches I found have 4 cables.
Do I just use 2 of those (power and ground)?
Or leave the ground in the chassis and use just the power?

Unfortunately, my case is different. I custom made my wiring connecting all 3 lights into a single harness, with a black wire (ground) and a red wire which I send to the fuse panel in the dashboard with an add-a-fuse.

I understand. That's initially how I set mine up as well. Then I wanted to add a switch to it and after researching things, this was the easiest way to do it.

I'm the furthest thing from an electrical engineer, but I think to add a switch like you want, you need to add a relay, which the wiring harness I linked to includes.

You can keep all of the wiring from your lights into 1 black and red wire with this harness. Run those wires to the area on the side of your battery. Then just splice those wires to the relay and fuse wiring harness. There will be some wires that come off the relay that you and send into your cab to wire whichever switch you bought.

It's easier to tap under the steering wheel because there are empty fuse plugs that you can use, you also don't have to make any holes in the water tight fuse box under the engine

you dont have to make any holes tapping to fuse box under the hood.

But if I were to go through the fuse box under the hood instead under the steering wheel, will there not be a slot for me to plug in the fuse?

use a "add a fuse" and connect through existing fuse slot. if you try looking up 4runner raptor lights or grill lights, theres plenty of info and videos. google is your friend.

Is there is a purpose of the front grille ember lights or is it just for looks?

They're mandated on cars wider than 80" via US Government

The Raptors are what popularized them. Standard F150s are just under 80" and Raptors are over 80", hence the need for the market lights.

Just tap into the parking lights. The low beams can't be on without the parking lights on, the high beams can't be on (more than just being able to flash) without the low beams on.

2020 Grill Amber lights mod

I recently traded in my 2018 TRD Off road, for a 2020 TRD off road, different color. But I had the three Amber led lights from Scoutofmind Amber LED Grille Lights 4Runner Wiring Harness | YotaLeds.com 4Runner Amber LED Wiring Harness Installation Guide - Scout of Mind[/url]). It’s a pretty straight forward install on the 2018. You tie them on the grill with zip ties, the harness provided has a ground that goes on the side of the battery and you have to push the rest of the wiring through the firewall rubber grommet into the cabin. You have to use the open fuese slot #14 to plug in the lights and that’s all. The lights turn on when you turn on the car and stay on all the time until you shut it off.

But on the 2020, there is no open fuse slot #14. Mainly because of all the added electronic systems on the new model. I reach out to the Scout team, but they told me to find an open slot and that would suffice, but that’s not the case on the 2020. But by process of elimination I was able to find a good place for them, but you’ll have to do away with the power adapters in the truck. I don’t use them mainly because I use the USB ports for my iPhone. Hopefully some else has another way to power the lights.

So I just bought the lights for my 2020 from Overland Depot.

I saw their installation video on Youtube so I installed them and got all the way to adding the wire to the inside fuse box and ... bam, fuses are completely different for the 2020.

I ended up putting it in the TAIL spot but that only lights them up when I actually turn the lights on. Does anyone know which spot in this image would be ok to put this in to have them running when the vehicle is turned on like the DRLs?

Ok cool. I saw that and know I don't have KDSS but in the back of my mind I was like "it came from the factory, they should know there's no KDSS.. must be required for something".

Seems like they put all the fuses in the 2020. I wonder if they just use the same fuse boxes on all models to save $. I had an 18 before and that one had several empty spots

I’ve been looking at doing this mod for a while.
Decided to take the plunge and see if I liked it or not.
Bought the following items:
Smoked marker lights, relay, AOB DRL switch and required 2 amp fuses, connectors and wire. VHT smoke lens paint to paint 2 coats on the already smoked lights to give them a more stealth look even when lit.

I think they came out really good.
They are totally black when not on and not overly bright when lit.

It's been a couple months so let's add another post or two to the thread!

I actually have my grill lights installed using the under hood fuse block approach. It's an "add a fuse" system plugged into a 10A location. Works just fine.

What I don't know is electric systems, at all.
My "add a fuse" is in a 10A slot per the instructions. The two spots on the "add a fuse" have the 10A fuse (which was originally provided in the fuse box) and a 5A fuse (orange in color) that came from the vendor in the "add a fuse" wiring. The vendor installation video says "15A" fuse...... This is the discrepancy I am trying to resolve.
Am I preparing for a fire, frequent shorts, or what? Should I swap the 5A for a 15A, or is the 5A fine? I ask because I've been told that going too large a number on these fuses can also be bad if the system wasn't designed for it (so don't put a 30A in there for example).

Thoughts/Guidance? Thanks.

Does anyone know which wire is the "dash light" on one of the factory switche on the left of the steering column.
I'm trying to get the backlight for my aftermarket button from one of the existing factory switches instead of doing a add a fuse.
