Cloudy side view mirrors?

I saw the recent TSB thread for the cloudy headlight lenses. It reminded me that my TE has cloudy side view mirrors (after a year). It's thicker around the edges -- like a halo. I've tried window cleaner and wax. Can't seem to remove it.

CO uses mag-chloride. Maybe that's the culprit. IDK...

Anybody else experiencing this?

Try a flat single edge razor blade to see if it will scrape off.

You can also use #0000 Steel wool or a clay bar as well. But don't use the clay again on your paint. Glass is much dirtier and will scratch the clear coat. I've used both on my glass before with good results. It's possibly just minerals and deposits from water that has been on the glass. Once it dries it leaves that gunk behind.

Novus Plastic Polish No. 2 Fine Scratch Remover works well for taking off any sort of crud like that on the surface of glass or plastic as long as it's on the outside. You can pickup a bottle at most Harley shops. Use a very soft cloth to do the polishing though so you don't cause more scratches.

Will this stuff work on chrome roof racks and liftgate trim where water has left spots? I can't get them off washing it...

Last night, tried Meguiar's Swirl Remover. Then a razor blade. :redbrick:

Looks like it might not be on the surface. Taking it to the dealer...

i had a bit of time today and tried some meguiar's plastx on the hazy mirrors.

worked like a charm. my mirrors are amazingly clear now.

i took a small penny sized amount on a micro fibre cloth and spread the plastx by hand on the mirror. then i buffed it out with a clean part of the micro fibre cloth.


good as new.

White Vinegar will do the trick on chrome and windows. Keep it off the painted / waxed areas. I usually just dab a cloth in the vinegar and wipe down chrome or windows.

Dealer will replace mirrors

Well, I took it in for an oil change, and the dealer could not remove the "clouds" from the mirror glass either, so they ordered up a set of replacement mirrors. Yeah! Install is tomorrow.

I highly recommend the service team at Larry Miller Boulder Toyota. Andre is service manager -- one of the best.

FYI, they mentioned that they're having lots of issues with mag chloride affecting T4R exterior chrome or faux-chrome, like non-TE door handles.
