Compiled: FJ Springs Lift Info for 4th gen

Hello all, I am new to the forum and have a question about the FJ coil lift.

My 4Runner is an 07 v6 with 100k miles.

I recently picked up off craigslist the following: FJ Front Coils, FJ front Bilstein Shocks, and FJ Rear Coils.

Questions

  • The Toytec space is recommended. Are you only supposed to use one, on a specific side? Or are you supposed to buy a pair and use one on each side?
  • I want to replace the rear shocks. Can you make a recommendation? I would like to keep it around $100 if possible. But it looks like if I want to match the front with Bilsteins I will need to bump it up to $200. Should I go 5100 or 5160?
  • Are there any other wear items I should replace while I have the front and rear taken apart?

Thank you.

The spacer lift mentioned is so you can level the truck out. It'll still lean to the heavier side (driver), so some folks will add a spacer to that side.

Spacers are also used to level out the Front - Rear rake. All up to you if you.

Replace anything rubber that looks worn or torn.

Oh wow. Thanks for clarifying! I don't yet have rear shocks so this is very helpful. I think I will go with these.

So really I only need to modify the front strut. Are there any pictures/documentation that show this? Or is it just too simple?

The front FJ Bilsteins (and 5th gen struts) just require a shave of the lower eyelet. Grind each side (dremel, death wheel, bench grinder) and test fit it into the lower A arm mount. If it's too tight, shave down some more. There's a thread somewhere showing exact measurements, but it's really not that hard.

Someone else said they just pried the A arm mount wider instead of grinding the strut. Your rig .. do as you want.

So one last simple dumb question!
Are you modifying the head of the eyelet by making it more narrow? Or are you widening the actual bolt hole of the eyelet?

Thanks

You want to thin down the width of the whole eyelet. Bolt hole is fine.

Good luck and happy wrenching!

Unfortunately, 99% of pictures in this and most other forums are all down after photobucket decided it wanted to charge its users to post links on 3rd party sites.

Just did it!

I just replaced the leaking X-REAS on my 08 Urban Runner with Bilstien 5100s and Moog FJ coils.

Before:

Driver - Front: 32.75
Driver - Rear: 34.75

Pass - Front: 33
Pass - Rear 35.75

After:

Driver - Front: 35
Driver - Rear: 36.75

Pass - Front: 35.5
Pass - Rear: 37.75

Measurements were taken with about 1/4 tank of gas. Overall I am very happy with the ride and the mild lift...not missing the X-REAS at all. I picked up the Bilstiens at Downsouth motorsports for $355 with free shipping. I’ll follow up in a couple of weeks once the suspension settles a bit and a full tank of gas.

theres an extension for chrome (and im sure most browsers) that effectively allows you to see all those pictures again! Its epic...hit a quick google search

Have 2wd V6 4runner with almost new oem Tokico shocks all around.

Has anyone run this setup with FJC coils in front using the stock shocks with maybe a small top plate spacer?

Looking for better handling but not too stiff of a ride which is almost entirely on road street.

thanks!

Which Daystar spacers for 2012 FJ/4R Struts and Springs

I have new take off 2012 TRD struts and springs to install in the 4th Gen. Am I ok ordering 03-09 kits or should I order 10-16 kits from Daystar? There part numbers are different.

How would the MOOG FJ springs ride with Bilsteins at 2.5”compared to stock? Thinking about doing this up front with possibly wheelers in the rear on Bilsteins. In desperate need of new suspension setup

I've tried asking this, here in this thread a few times with no replies. Either no ones done it, or those who have done it just don't see my post.... I hope someone replies eventually!

Oh sorry, I haven't seen your question ( I don't check this thread often).
I have that exact setup with 1.5" spacers in the rear and it worked great for me for years. I actually had used FJ springs, rather than new Moogs.
After many miles... 60k? 80k? ...the springs started sagging on me. I just replaced the rears today with some actual 2" lift springs and found I actually broke a coil off the driver's side FJ spring!!! I admit that when I'm off road for a few days, the truck is pretty well loaded and I also severely overload the truck with product for the drive back from my warehouse, so who knows when that happened.
Otherwise though, I was very happy with that setup for a long time. If you plan to ever add any weight though, skids, sliders, etc, the FJ coils may be quickly overloaded.

THe moog FJ 4x4 front coils are heavy duty. I have them with 5100's @ .85 and it yields around 2.5" of lift. They feel good. I wouldnt set the bilsteins higher than .85 with them

No worries. Do you possibly have any pics of the billys at 2.5" with the fjc moogs? I currently have them set up at 1.75" up front, and a 1.5" rear spacer...

Did you also get UCAs? If not, what are your alignment numbers?

Why do you say that? I currently have mine set at 1.75 and thinking about 2.5" once I get sliders on..

Photos of the lift are here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/100615-jds-lift.html

No UCA's at the time, although I'm putting them in with my new springs now. And no, sorry, I never got my alignment numbers.

You sure you have the moog 4x4 ones? Cause the regular moog fj ones are a lighter rate.

Also bulstein doesn’t reccomend using a higher perch with a higher rate spring

All I know of, is that Moog only has FJC springs. Not FJC 2wd and FJC 4wd springs. I have part number 81108 and 81081. Does rate matter more than the overall length of the spring? I was under the impression that bilstein doesn't recommend using the higher perch with a longer/taller spring.
