DIY: Interior LED swap (cluster, HVAC, switches, window, *steering wheel)

i know when i tried to explain my 12v mod, i think everyone is confused on how to do it.

if memory serves (I'm not going back to look in this thread), I think you just found a 12V+ in the dash and grounded it somewhere. That's the probably the best way to go, but then dimming is no longer an option. This is how I wired my current setup. I'm actually thinking of hooking it up to a OEM toyota dimmer. The replacement set up has more densely spaced LEDs AND I'll be adding light diffusers.

the DAC is Neo3 and the 4WD selector switch is Neo5.

Should breakdown like this IIRC:

Neo3 (3mm LED)
 • AC 115V switch
 • Center Diff Lock switch
 • VSC ioff switch
 • RSCA off switch
 • DAC
 • Reset/Mode
 • Fan Speed
 • Temp and AC
 • Circulation selector
 • Rear defroster
 • Recirculate

Neo5 (5mm LED)
 • 4WD selector
 • (2) HVAC readout
 • Hazard ?? (unsure)

I'm sure Alex can confirm or correct since the last time I took this apart was in 2008.:biggrin2:

No no no no no!! The 4WD selector is not a Neo5. Neo5 bulb doesn't come close to fitting... way too big for the opening. Probably a Neo4. So frustrated! I bought Neo3s to start, then Neo5s, now have to pay shipping for a Neo4, lol.

I saw some comments that people had to grind down their Neo3 bulbs for the switches. I didn't have to grind mine down to fit. I haven't put the vehicle back together yet, so haven't tested them... but what happens if I don't grind them down?

NEO3s discontinued?

Hi all-

I'm new to the forum. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks while I was looking to purchase a 4R. I bought a 05 SR5 last week, and decided to replace the dash and cluster lights (with Yosh's help, thanks) since some of the lights are out. I've bought the plccc-2's, but I've found out this morning that superbrightleds.com has discontinued the NEO3's in white (no more available). Does anyone know of other vendors for NEO3s? I need 7 white NEO3s. And is there any way to determine the difference between NEO3s and NEO3-HPs, besides the name or ordering them and, by trial and error, plugging them in? It seems to me that the NEO3s look like bulbs with the plastic 'top-hat" column attached to the led while the NEO-HP is missing the plastic "top-hat". Will the specs indicate a difference on the product pages?

Thanks for the info.

Neo3 : regular 3mm LED
Neo3HP : PLCC-2 (3528) SMD. same LED as the cluster

HPs will work for your HVAC no problem. you will potentially have a brighter hotspot on the bottom left of each dial though. Remember, the Neo4HP will NOT work in your info display area (as another dude mentioned, unless you do "his" 12v mod...still waiting on the write up for that to help other members btw...). the SMD leds look a little better on paper than the 3mm as far as viewable angle (120* vs 100*), but i fear the increase in lumen output of the SMD will create harsher hotspots.

hope that helps. bummer they are discontinuing the neo3, we will all have to find another vendor for those, or start rebasing them ourselves.

Buyer beware:
seems this site has neo bulbs. i have never done business with them, so i am not recomending them, but they at least have the proper bulbs in stock it seems. and at half the price of superbrightLEDs

Good info!

Will Neo3-HPs work for the Recirc/Defrost backlights, Mode/ Select, Rear Window, DCA, and Locker buttons, as well? I feel like I'm forgetting another Neo3 swap site?!

Hey all-

I'm sure its been done before, but I've never seen pictures of an LED swap using white backlighting with white needles. So... I thought I'd post mine. I'm very happy with them. Also changed most of the warning lights in the dash with blue.

Note, since the non-Limited 4Runners don't have needles individually lit, you can't just change the bulb to make the needle whatever color you want. You have to sand off the orange paint and add new paint. Or, in my case, just use a somewhat coarse grit to make an opaque white color.

Also curious what everyone thinks of the trim. I painted all the bright silver plastic trim to an Anthracite Gray using Plasti-Dip, plus Glossifier. Also put in a new Kenwood DNX572BH Head Unit with GPS, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM. Love it.

I used Neo4HPs on the HVAC screen, Neo3 standard bulbs on the switches and knobs, and 74 LED Bulb - 3 SMD LED - Miniature Wedge Retrofit bulbs on the shifter, cup holders, and glove box. The 4WD switch takes a Neo4 bulb... but because it uses a diffuser, the lighting won't be uniform. I decided to keep the existing bulb but remove the little rubber colored jacket from the bulb. It's still an amber color, but maybe a little brighter. I chose white for the the following:

 • HVAC screen and knobs
 • Shifter lights
 • Glove box
 • Steering wheel buttons
 • Door window switch
 • Rear window switch
 • Hazard light button
 • Rear defrost, mode, and circulation buttons

I did everything else in blue (cup holders, push buttons to the left of the steering wheel, push buttons down in the center console).

looks good SteveAndStaci! Seems as though one side of your info display is brighter than the other, or is that just the camera? also, you used HPs in the info display, did you wire them for 12v or did they just work? i was always under the impression you had to do the highly secret 12v mod to get them to light up, is this not the case?

Yeah I can't take credit. The guy with the highly secret 12v mod did mine. You're right about the screen. Both sides are working but one is dimmer than the other. I'm sending it back to redo... all we can guess is maybe a bad resistor in the LED. I have a new one on order.

For as much stuff as I just finished doing and for as far apart I had taken the vehicle, I'm happy with just having to make a couple small fixes!

resistors rarely go bad. i wonder if the secret way is wired in series, therefore giving less voltage to the one side?

Not sure. But all the other photos I've seen where emelianenkov has done the 12V mod, the lighting looks even. I think its just a one-off issue. He said he'd fix it and ship it back next-day. Hopefully soldering in a new Neo4HP bulb will fix the problem.

That's what I'm thinking, could be the same issue I had with mine. One side (LED) of my HVAC would constantly go out. The "secretive 12V mod" is faulty.

Well my version of 12v mod been flawless. No problem yet or led burnt out. Should of unwind the leads and find the pos and neg. Tap the pos to a switch acc source and ground out the neg. This way it'll stay on full when the key is in acc. Also it's not control by the dimmer no more.

Complete agree with ya Tom! I hooked mine up like yours and no problem whatsoever (with power). But you can make up the loss of the dimmer by adding one. I don't believe it should be too difficult. I would find a Toyota dimmer (there are tons on fleabay), find the wiring diagram of it, then connect it all.
