Fridge/Freezer set up

I'm taking my trip in The Trans America Trail again in September​ and I decided that I will purchase a Fridge/Freezer for the truck. I'm leaning towards a Dometic either 50 or 65. I believe that I will need solar but I'm not sure. What are you guys running? I'd love to see pics of the set up and hear a brief description and any advise you have. Thanks.

We're driving up to Alaska this summer, and got a Engel MT45 for the trip. My plan was to basically get a bigger battery, and run a 12v to the back directly from the battery. I bought an X2 (North Star) group 31M at Batteries Plus. I'm planning on building some sort of cargo organisation. I'm not building drawers, but something based around storage containers. I also plan on taking out the rear seats and putting the fridge behind the front seats for easy access. I'll post a build thread featuring this stuff eventually....

How did you tackle the 12V constant-on plug? I've seen a couple of options on here, but it almost seems like the easiest way to do it is to make a new plug.

I haven't yet. I just got a new battery last week. I plan on figuring this out in the coming weeks.

OK. I'll have my CFX-50 in hand in a few days, so I'll be even more interested in how you crack that nut then.

I'm in between running a heavy-gauge wire to form a new 12V socket, or using a battery pack (Yeti 400, Anker Powerhouse, etc.) as a quasi dual-battery setup that can work in any vehicle or as a hurricane prep setup at home.
 
The latest issue of the Overland Journal had a fridge/freezer roundup and the Indel B fridge/freezer displaced the ARB fridge for the editors value choice. It has the same Danfoss compressor (well reviewed) as the other players in this price bracket. The Dometic did not fare as well as either. The 51L Indel B has great group buys here (there is one on right now $449 shipped). Overland Journal was pretty high on the performance and the only thing they didn't really like was the control placement and the depth but those are both positives to me and easily solved on a slide. I have the 51L Indel B since the last group buy and it has been running 24/7 without a problem.
 
Most people run new 8ga or 10ga wire to a new socket. This is probably easier than installing new wire on the existing plug. This is the route I will eventually go if I upgrade my battery or if I go to a dual battery setup. For now I have a Yeti 400 behind the fridge that charges when the vehicle is running on trips and when I get there I have a solar panel to charge the Yeti 400. The nice thing about this setup is that I can take the power source and fridge out of the truck if I want. It is not a budget solution for sure but it is a nice, multipurpose setup.
 
Just to be clear, do you have to do anything with the Yeti when you leave the vehicle, or is it pretty much stand-alone once you've got everything plugged in? I've heard that the lead-acid Yeti 400 doesn't like to be plugged in much after it's topped off.
 
No it is pretty much plug and play. The Yeti is like your car battery, it doesn't mind being constantly topped off, it does not like to sit discharged. When you buy one the first thing the flap on the box tells you to do is plug it in to get it charged. People who have problems with the Yeti are those who leave it sitting unplugged for long periods. On Pb acid batteries that kills cells, leaving them on trickle charge (same as plugging in the Yeti) is not bad. If you are worried about that Goal Zero makes a new Yeti that is Lithium Ion and dispenses with that worry, but will cost you more to play.

The Indel B group buy ended on May 1st.

Oh God!! I finally figured out my choice and now you have me second guessing myself (AGAIN) :confused:
 
I found the group buy and called truck fridge and was able to get the same discount and I was able to so I got the Indel B hopefully it will last a long time. If I can get 2yrs out of it I will be happy.

For the wiring, this is what you seek OP. I used it in my previous vehicle with a fridge wired to a deep cycle battery. Be aware that the stock battery will only last so long if you plan to keep the fridge running while the vehicle is turned off. Ask me how I know...:ybrick:
