Going Bigger - 5th Gen Tire Fitment Guide

20x9 KMC Chrome Wheels, 275/55/20 Goodyear Eagle LS2s on my 2011 Limited, never had a rubbing problem and made no adjustments to the fender liners. These tires have 67k miles on them and Toyota service says they are 8/32nds on three of them and 9/32nds on one tire. I bought the vehicle new in April 2011 and put these tires and wheels on in September 2011.

Just thought I'd give a quick review of my replacement tires. I went with the Goodyear Duratrac Wranglers, in 255/75/17, speed rating S (112 mph), Load index 115 (2679 lbs.), inflated to 38 psi. These are on my '15 Trail KDSS with stock suspension.

The Good:
No Rubbing even at full lock
No noticeable increase in noise or vibration.
No noticeable change in mpg.
Excellent traction in all conditions I've encountered so far.
Relatively Cheap tire with good warranty and mileage rating.
They look fantastic.

The Bad:
At highway speeds, the tires can become a bit squirrely. Straight line driving is fine, but the tires don't track very well when cornering above 65 mph. At 80 mph, it is very noticeable and doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. Not sure if this is indicative of DuraTracs, or if its due to the narrower width, or a combination of the two.

Would I recommend them:
Yes and no. I rarely drive faster than 70, and don't rack up a lot of highway miles, so the handling issues are not a deal breaker for me. There are so many good traits associated with this tire, I am really happy with them. But, if the vehicle is to be driven on the interstate at high speed frequently, you might want to explore other options, especially if inexperienced drivers will be driving it.

I'd love to hear if anyone with 265/70/17 duratracs has experienced this higher speed instability.

thanks for this! It was hard to find a solid answer about 255/75r17 on a stock 5th gen trail. I know that chart says it's good, but couldn't find many 5th gen post with that tire Size. Will be running the same setup but instead of duratrac's going with st maxx's. :thanks:

Hey 1engineer - Bro I need a final vote of confidence lol.

I'm A) trying to decide whether the price is right

And if so B) going to buy some Rubicon Takeoffs 255/75

I have definitely read the graph, and I would just love if someone had some experience with this tire to say one way or another, but I'm non-lifted in stock form, and about to buy a set to throw on as a temporary "Terrain" tire till I get my lift and tires I really want down the road.

Will this 255/75's make me regret buying them, or should they work out pretty well?

Should work just fine. It's only .5 more in diameter larger and about .5 less than stock in width. Pretty skinny tire for a 5th gen, so not the ideal choice.

Would need more details on the load rating... to make sure there were adequate.

Should work well on the trail, but not so sure about grip on the road.... Clearly not the ideal tire, but for the right price and short term use they could provide some good utility and bang for the buck.

rubbing and or need for BCM are need because of increased diameter and width of the tire as tire is turned ( arc circle) ( neglecting other factors for now such as off set and suspension compression spacers).

I am torn between a 275/55-20 (32 OD)
and
265/60/20 (32.5 OD)

2014 Limited (Retaining X-...)
Day star lift (soon)
and trying to determine tires for a 95% road/5% light trail build

It is known( from this forum) that a 275/55-20 will fit with out a lift.

I would really like this threads input if a 32.5 od tire but with a 265 profile would fit on a 14 LT with X system on a daystare lift....

Hello from Huntsville..
I'm running SR5 with 275 65 18 with 2.5" lift in front and 2" lift in rear, and rub in reverse with wheels turned. Wheels are +1 offset 18 x 9. I intend to move the liner forward as soon as I get a free moment. For tires, I am really liking the cooper ATPs (At3 version from discount tire) with similar driving conditions. Lift is Bilstein 6112 with SAW rear coils and 5100s. You are welcome to try mine since you are local. I would have loved the opportunity to try before you buy..
Once I get time will post pics to the lifted section

Yea so here's my situation.... I am looking to head out on a little offroad thing up north next month and then just random little stuff around town on the weekends... I have road tires that just aren't cutting it due to "chipping" offroad and obviously just not ideal for off pavement terrain. So I think I may score a set of 5 for 550 and then sell the wheels they are coming with for a couple hundred bucks and then sell my current tires for a little cash and basically offset the price of the tires close to completely.

This would give me the short term solution for offroad needs till I can get my lift squared away and get the tires I really want. Then I can turn around and sell these for a quick buck as well assuming they are still in good shape.

I feel like I've seen a lot of folks running the "Pizza cutters" on the 5th gens around here? You really think there not a good application for the 5th gen?

I believe it's a "C" rated tire and max load is 2405lbs

Hey Peglegs , How do you like the lift with the 6112's and saw coils!? Ive been leaning towards 6112's and 5160's myself still in the air on the coils. Looking to accomplish no more then 2-2.5 lift.

Before every post on this forum I should state that extensive research/searching/stickies went into every equipment decision, personal opinion of said equipment, and prior to every post. lol And no I didn't respond to 4 year old threads, or buy a TRD Pro, or vote for Obama.....

IceCold81, Hi, I should mention first that I'm very picky about feel on road and I'm still tinkering with alignment....
If I were to do it all over again, I would start with Bilstein 5100s all around and leave the rear at stock height. Many things did improve with this lift; nose dive, high speed turns, pillowy feel gone, clearance. Some things reduced; speed bumps now feel like bigger clunks, gas mileage reduced by .4 MPG (according to the dash guage not real math), floaty steering at speed (intend to realign with more caster real soon), rutted gravel roads feel more clunky and tossed around more, still rub with 275 65 18s, and a step to get in is needed which will reduce clearance. If 2 to 2.5 lift is what you really want all around, I like this set up but would also look at the Boss which appears pretty similar but I have no first hand experience with it. I don't see a need to go to 5160s in the rear. 5100s are available and much cheaper. The SAW or Icon rear coils appeared on paper to be the spring rates I wanted. I am happier with the rear than the front, but a caster fix may improve the front. Both front and rear clunk pretty hard on bumps and are more unsettling on bumps at an angle. I do not intent to add much weight to front or rear so went with these for the closer to stock spring rates.

For all of the on the road negatives in handling and performance that a lift adds, I do feel more confident going fast in turns and no longer want to drive this new car off a cliff due to the nose dive. Hopefully a caster adjustment improves it more :)

My before gas mileage (on the dash) was 16.1 with mostly in town trips to work. I took a road trip to New Orleans right after the lift with 90 plus mph and was surprised to see it drop to 15.6. With that fast I did expect a drop in mileage but that seams like a lot.

I may drop the front 6112s to the 3rd notch and realign to see if that helps with the steering/caster adjustability/need for a step.

Originally I test drove a trail with kdss and loved it. I needed 3 rows of seats for the 4 daughters and wife so I ordered the 15 SR5 premium and hated the suspension. I like the trail with kdss much better than mine before and after the suspension upgrade

lol great feedback man!

Yea I feel 100% on the nose dive and body roll in corners it drives me insane! I can't wait to get rid of the squishy feeling. I don't know that I NEED 2.5 inch lift but I would like to achieve 2" I think for sure while accomplishing "Leveling" Good feedback regarding the 5100's vs 5160's I still haven't figured out if the 5160's are worth the extra coin.

For now I just want to tighten up the road manners, and offer a bit more capability/clearance off road. Pretty much what my goals are for this Rig.

Excellent chart, excellent thread.

Thanks, OP.

I actually understand the chart, used it, and have no stupid questions to ask.

Will be sticking with stock size despite 2.5" leveling lift. It's just... easier.

I'd love to hear if anyone with 265/70/17 duratracs has experienced this higher speed instability.

So... Did they get any better over time?

275's May Still Rub

Installed 275 70 17 on FN CounterSteer X with 4.1 back space. Some tire contact on the mud guards bump-out. Suspect this is caused by the difference in back space from stock wheels. (Caster is +4°)

What is the wheel width and backspacing on those wheels if you don't mind me asking?

The KM2s tend to rub more than similar size tires of other brands... Should be able to resolve the BM rub (without a chop) via an alignment if you have aftermarket UCAs.... (assuming a 285/70/17)

ya know - I've aligned that thing probably 3-4 times trying to get it to feel right. Pretty close, but no luck on keeping the rub out. I have the LCR UCAs at the 4 degree setting - should I put it back to neutral (2 degree)? From what i understood you wanted to push it forward as much as possible to keep it from rubbing the BMs - any thoughts?

rubbing and or need for BCM are need because of increased diameter and width of the tire as tire is turned ( arc circle) ( neglecting other factors for now such as off set and suspension compression spacers).

I run 275/65 - 20 DuraTacs. But I have done BMC, 3 inch lift and am running SpiderTraxx spacers.
