Helped a Friend Get His First 4RNR Yeterday

A good friend and coworker purchased his first 4Runner yesterday. It is a 2012 SR5, 2WD, kind of high mileage for a 4 year old vehicle, 67K, but a very clean and well maintained Carfax report. Local vehicle, looks like all highway miles. I stopped and looked at it for him first, very, very clean. Non smoker interior and almost like new inside. No dings or scratches, just very minor nicks on the front end. No stuck bugs, very unusual for a Mississippi to Louisiana commuter vehicle.

Engine sounded great and no signs of leaks on the bottom. Ran the codes, none at all. Oh, and it has the Party Mode button, now I know what all the fuss is about. My 2015 does not have one.

NADA AND KBB had the FMV at $26.5K, he paid $23.8K. So another one is converted. His first Toyota.

I believe the 4-cyl was only available for the 2010 model. Way too underpowered so they discontinued it.

Seldom gets up to operating temperature
Lots of braking and acceleration
Much more ingress and egress than normal.

Example: A 600 mile interstate trip done in 10 hours.
Inital start and drive for 300 miles. Stop, fill up, eat, pee and you drive another 300 miles to your destination.
In that trip you got in and out twice and seldom used your brakes. Your acceleration was smooth and you kept the same RPM for long periods. The vehicle only had to get up to operating temperature twice.

Example: 600 miles done in town, 10 miles at a time.
You made 60 trips. By the time your vehicle warmed up you turned it off. You accelerated and decelerated countless times at stoplights. You got in and out of your vehicle 120 times. Your catalytic converter never got up to operating temp and you ran rich the whole time. Due to the obvious curves and potholes your tires took a beating.

It has the 4.0, I did not know they put a 4 cylinder in a 4Runner? At least the Gen 4 or 5, I should clarify.

Forgot to add, he traded in a 2004 Tahoe with 230K miles, they gave him $500 for it. Do you think a 2004 4Runner with 230K will fetch more than $500?

Saker I looked at your EBRs. Me like...I frequent Jims a lot. I have a LMT and Larue collection. I just sold my LMT MWS to purchase a Larue OBR in 7.62. The MWS was scary accurate but with a USOptics on it, it weighed a ton. My Larues are outstanding and the OBR will be lighter.

I am regularly checking on Here's Johnny. Stif won't return. I know speedy is back under a new name and I am watching closely. I believe in 2nd chances but not 8th chances.
