I ve never heard of a rubber traffic pole.

Ours are plastic in both our parking garages just for stupid people who decide the bright yellow 4" round pole is not distracting enough. we replace a couple each month out of 2000 spot garages

My post was primarily sarcasm. The truth is that crumple zones, by their very nature result in more damage from minor impacts. This is the trade off for safety. I’m glad we have them!

I have no idea if OP was trying to gas through it or not, the plastic feels flimsy enough that I can imagine significant damage from a fairly minor incident.

Not to be confrontational, but crumple zones on body on frame vehicles are fairly useless. See the offset crash data for the 4R and pickups. Frames do not crumple and absorb energy the way unibody construction does. You have a far better chance of leaving an offset impact as a “lifeless corpse” in a body on frame vehicle, especially in offset impacts. Framed vehicles have to rely far more on airbags, passive and active safety.

Laugh about it now and carry on with living. Also dont drive over things designed to stop you from driving over them lol. I know the plastic ones you are talking about but around here those are in high speed areas so you dont die if you hit them

Absolutely. BOF vehicles are some of the least safe on the road for sure. I just see a lot this attitude that vehicle A took less damage in a crash than vehicle B, so vehicle A must be safer when in reality the opposite is probably true, so it gets my hackles up. My own sister makes her daughter drive the family pickup instead of the family Honda Accord because she thinks it's safer, and no one can convince her otherwise. Pretty infuriating.

What kinda Honda? I'd put my kids in a pickup in certain situations over a Camry any day.

Wow, I'm laughing at my mistake, seems like there's a whole bunch of newbie 4runner people here that take things a little too seriously.

I was going like 1-2 mph. I definitely didn't gas it. It was a funny / silly mistake. Even the insurance gal laughed at it.

Small word of advice: get out and inspect it next time because I would imagine assuming a line/rock/water on the trail will result in you losing your vehicle to immense damage, or worse.

The 5 mph standard is that you bump something at 5 mph and don't get damage. This guy was on the gas trying to push through the obstacle. He was using 4 liters of destruction to drive through his "rubber" pole. Not at all the same. And the crumple zones you're scoffing at save lives in higher speed collisions every single day. Would you rather leave an undamaged vehicle for EMS to drag your lifeless corpse out of, or climb out of a completely destroyed vehicle with minor injuries? Just look at what happens in a Nascar wreck. Those cars are completely obliterated by design because that's how you protect the driver.

There are plastic welding machines out there. Body shops regularly use them. That sounds like a perfect job for one. I have damaged nearly every area on my bumpers. It’s not a show vehicle.

What’s interesting is that in my 2011 runner, I hit 4 deer and a turkey. The deer at speeds from 5-25, all of them made the plastic shell bumper cover toast. The turkey, different story, flew off the roost and lit in my lane while I was going 70! Ouch that was whacky! That was $5200 in plastic repairs and I had no turkey dinner! He was mashed!

So guys, stuff happens! We’ve all done stuff we’ve regretted!
