Taco/4R interior accessories?

Hey guys, I was curious if anybody knew if the clock and stereo units between the 3rd gen 4Runner and 1st gen Tacoma are interchangeable? From what I understand they're the exact same parts/units, just with the amber lighting, but I've yet to see much confirming whether or not they'll fit right in - hard to find a Taco clock outside the entire dash assy to confirm. After this weekend these will be the only major green lights in my interior, and would love it if they were orange as well.

People used to use a kind of amber gel used typically as a filter on a camera lens to change the color of the clock. The name escapes my mind at the moment.

And I'd highly recommend an aftermarket stereo at this point. The difference in tech from an OE stereo in 1996 to even a mid-grade aftermarket one in 2020 is staggering lol.

What, you mean like a touchscreen? I'd rather have no car at all then be caught dead with an infotainment screen :lmao: I wanted a CQ-VX5500K for a while but its impossible to find a K and non-D model, and is a little much to spend considering I don't even like music. All I'm trying to do is match my colorscheme, if I could find something to do with that space I'd remove the stereo altogether, honestly

I'm not much more help on the clock, I've never had one that even worked lol.

I don't do touchscreens either, I'm not into the flashy extras, so that's not really what I mean by technology. I'm talking about general sound quality, audio adjustments, interface, all the Bluetooth and HD radio goodies, etc.

My personal preference is the Pioneer 8000 series single DIN, I have an X8700BS in my daily 4runner and I love it. Doesn't do anything but play music, but it's really high quality overall so it doesn't feel "cheap" like the average Wal-Mart deck you see most people use. Swapping out to a high-ish end pioneer unit has become my first modification for any vehicle I plan on driving a whole lot.

How did you swap them out? Just got the taco clock in the mail and its MUCH bigger - the actual electrical boards are the similar size but the holes done line up

I misplaced the clock when I moved to my new house, it's in a bag in a box some where but still have intentions to change it when I find it.

From the looks of it I'm not sure it will work. To align one of the holes, you would have to drill/widen through some of the connections on the back (only barely so). Was afraid it might ruin the clock by doing so but I'll try again later, at worst I'm out of a clock I have no use for anyways

TTORA guys did it back in the days so I know it can be done. If you damage yours, I'll find mine and send it to ya.

So with a little cutting I was able to fit it in, and to my dismay it's still the same color - turns out the lenses is what tints it orange... probably should've checked that to begin with :smash:

Not sure if you knew or not but only 01-04 tacos had the orange lighting, 95-00 would be green like the 4runner.

I'm aware. It's a 01-04 clock that came out of the ignition bezel, and lights up perfectly orange once the lens is in place.

Just making sure. I hadn't had either apart. Interesting they did it that way but makes sense with the rest of the lineup staying green past 01.

Couldnt get a good picture in the dark, but it's done! Unplug the amp and it fits right in - no loss in sound quality from what I can tell
