Best thing I ever did.....

Visually it's a nice truck. It doesn't come close mechanically though. You'll have more problem with that truck in the future than the 4Runner you just traded in.

:iagree:This. For sure. I don't want to jump on the flame wagon, but come back in three years when the electronics fail. I like F150's and all, but it's a good bit of money for what you get...

Congrats on your new ride! I was debating on to get a F150 or 4runner. Since I go to NYC very often, finding a parking would be tough, so I went with a 4runner.

Ford+disposable vehicle

Bought a new Ford Truck in 1999 after College. By 85k miles it had a bad clutch and non-functioning transfer case. Enjoy the truck.....it'll go into self-destruct mode after 75k miles. My advice would be to start saving now for your next down-payment because you won't get crap for a trade-in.

So a guy trades his 5th gen in for a Ford. So what, who cares. A lot of people doing some bashing in here, I just don't understand why people get take it personally. Enjoy the Ford bro, I hope it suits you well.

At least he didn't get Government Motors and stuck to a company that didn't take handouts. GM sucks ass. They take billions and then report they paid it off just months later, when really all they did was get another loan to pay the original loan off and then made a commercial saying they paid off evey penny they borrowed from the gov't.

Was trade my 2011 SR5 for this (2011 FX4 F150):

2gwyii9.jpg

The SR5 was a big disappointment. The interior felt cheap with all that plastic. Horrible stock radio. Brake sway felt like you were doing an endo on a bike. No driver controlled 2nd row dome light. No 3rd row dome light at all.

And the worst part was the rear sag. Practically dragging bumper when pulling a small popup camper.

Glad I got rid of her.

How odd... I traded in my F150 for a 4Runner. The stuff in the box kept getting wet, and my passengers kept falling off the tailgate when I pulled away. Getting the 3rd row seating in a Limited has made them much happier.

Guess I made a stupid choice based on my real needs, eh? but I'm feeling better now.

I don't quite understand why the 3rd row dome light was such a sticking point for the OP... and then he bought a vehicle without a 3rd row. I mean, I fully get trading a vehicle you don't like for something else.. everyone has done it. I sold my VW GTI because it was too unreliable for my liking (even though I really loved the car's engine, interior, and handling). I replaced it with a reliable Toyota, thus fixing the reliability issue. Complaining about the lack of a 3rd row dome light that prevents you from tending to your children in the 3rd row and then buying a vehicle that doesn't even have a 3rd row would be like me replacing my fifth gen GTI with a fourth gen GTI (well known for being very unreliable).

f150 is fine

I didn't find this to be true. My 2004 F150 has 156k on it and doing fine.

Mine was a Ranger 4x4. Maybe that's they're worse than F150's. Was yours a 4x4? The mechanic said "oh yeah, these transfer cases fail all the time". Anyway....I thought I'd be patriotic and spend my hard-earned money on a Ford. I'll never do it again.

Honestly this thread was good for me as I'm considering a supercrew f150 right along with a new 4runner.

The one thing that has me very interested in the Ford is the great Ecoboost motor. 3.5L twin turbo direct injection with a great transmission and running gear. The Ford SYNC system is also highly lauded.

In my opinion Toyota needs to step it up with their powertrain. They need a six speed transmission, motor could certainly use some more power but it is adequate.

agreed. but I would not trust ford with a complex FI set up. I just don't have faith in them anymore.
I still love the 4r. Is it slow? yes. Is it fitting my needs? Hell yes.
I've been very much pleased and happy with it thus far.

Yeah I hear you, that's why I am leaning towards a 4runner along with pure physical size. I think the size of the 4runner is more compatible with city living and family outdoor getaways. 4runner does the compromise of all things pretty well.

Also my Toyota vehicles have all treated me well and although I'm not a loyalist (I buy the best product) Toyota is a known entity.

No. 2004 F150 supercab. Been really reliable. Buying a new vehincle now and it has come down to supercrew f150 with ecoboost or trail edition 4runner.

75% getting a forerunner as the family is growing, just hard to give up the pickup bed. We could be happy with either!

That's what I'm choosing between as well.

From what I've seen the supercrew f150 has more room in the second row than 4runners. The cargo area is just different.

Ecoboost 4x4 F150 seems to be getting just as good of MPG as 4runners which is very cool.

The F150 is fine for what it is, so I don't have anything negative to say about it. However, since this is a forum for 4Runner owners/enthusiasts, what exactly was the intent of the ex-4Runner owner in posting this:confused:? Regardless of the answer to that, who cares. JJMAC--Adios:hello:. Have fun on the Ford forums:redbrick:.

The 1GR doesn't make enough torque at low RPM to fully utilize a 6AT, IMO. The gearing in the GX 6AT for gears 1-5 is identical to that of the 5AT in the 4Runner. It has a 3.9 final drive versus the 3.7 in the 4Runner. When you factor in the tire size difference, the gearing is pretty dern close. Anyway, the V8 in the GX makes about 40 more ft-lb of torque at 1750 RPM (that is the engine speed for the GX at 70mph in 6th gear) than the 4Runner makes at 2000 RPM (again, 70mph cruising speed). Running through all the gearing calculations, both make about 34hp at the wheels at 70mph (not including drivetrain losses). If you were to mate the 6AT up to the 1GR as is, it would be making something like 20% less power at 70mph... which means that it would downshift to 5th gear a lot more frequently than the V8, thus reducing the benefit of the 6th gear.

Just playing around, I plugged in the V8 torque curve numbers into my calculations for the 4Runner and played with the cruising RPM a bit. I think that the gas mileage would not be that much worse, possibly very close to the V6, if they would offer the V8 + 6AT. That V8 can lug along at a pretty low engine speed and still make the same HP at the wheels.

Damn, I love spreadsheets.

JJMAC,

Mind sharing some numbers? What did it cost for the trade/upgrade? Options on the FX4?

What mpg are you seeing with the EBoost?

I had one of the first 2001 Supercrews in 2000, was a pretty good truck but had its share of problems. Have not had a Ford since, but like the new F150 more than any other 1/2 ton.

Good information. Bottom line from is that Toyota should offer the V8/6spd combination.

It would be great if they could offer a 6 speed with the V6 with 4runner specific ratios. Of course with parts sharing that's not feasible and too make a custom 4Runner 6spd transmission would be a big expense. If they ever redesign the Tacoma it could come then.
