Purchased my Rola vortex from Home Depot of all places. Was around $115 with free in store pick up. Sanded down, used black silicone to seal every crack and used two cans of Duplicolor truck bed coating to cover everything up. Love how it turned out!

Mounting Options

My wife has a 2015 4Runner with the standard grey side rails on the roof, but no cross brackets. She has been wanting a roof rack and I just ordered the Rola Vortex. In order to mount this rack do I need to get the cross bars? Either that or I figure I could get the low profile mounts from ArmourTech that have been talked about in this thread. If I order cross bars, are there different options and ones that have a lower profile overall or are the standard ones that fit the 4runner all the same?

I've been shopping for options to. According to armor tech website the mounts are only for 03-09 and they state that they don't know of any other models using it. I have just emailed them to see if they have a update since then. I have a 2016 gen5 and interested in the same rack.

Has anyone used this rack on a newer model or gen 5 with those mounts that can verify that they fit?

I second this. I'd prefer not to spend $1k on a rack that will also rust over time (Baja Standard is the only other rack that speaks to me). I wish some of these steel rack-makers offered aluminum versions, acknowledging that they wouldn't be quite as strong, but finish-wise would hold up better over time.

Has any 5th Gen owner gotten the Rola rack mounted using the low profile mounts, flipped? I'd really like to see some pictures if anyone has successfully done it. Mounted to crossbars it rides a little high for my taste.

If it can be done, I'll definitely pick one up, replace the hardware and meticulously seal it with gasket sealant and re-paint.

It's only been a month or so, but we've definitely seen some rain. My rack seems to be holding up OK. I sealed the connections and screw holes. The new Rola racks also come with rubber sleeves to place over the seams too. I'm keeping a close eye on potential rust issues though.

I have posted pics of rola with extension and 4x adapters, did not wanted to flip the adapters so used 1/8 rubber gasket from ace hardware to raise it a bit, prefer it to be as low as possible without touching the roof

To those of you that have the new version with the rubber sleeves that slide over the joints...did these help with the rusting issue? Or should I still silicone the joints and re-paint as well?

I have the 'old' one without the sleeves. I just took some bicycle tubing to remedy. Ive had it on for 2 yrs now no problems. Embarrassingly I haven't utilized it much. Lol

sorry I fugedup the title and could not edit it, but two 1/8" pieces seem to work best, its on a 4th gen

Hey does your roof rack vibrate/ howl at all. When I'm on the freeway going above 60 to 75mph. It starts to howl. I can't pin point it. I tug on the rack and it's solid. No movement. I don't know if it's the wind deflector, but that's been tightened and sealed around he edges as well. I feel like it the actual hollow construction of the rack that vibrates. Any ideas?

It resonated on couple of rides when I first got it but was happening around 10-20 mph, and it happend to be quiet windy in Atlanta that day, nothing since then
