Going to 35's help me pick tires

On my last several 4runners I've run the Mickey Thompson MTZ and loved them. They are fairly quiet, have good tread life, work well on and off road in most all conditions, and they look good. But it's time to try something different (I think). I've spent a lot of time looking at tires and I think I've narrowed it down to the BFG KM2, the MTR, or the MTR with kevlar.

how about Wrangler Duratracs for $972.87 shipped to NC from Treadepot.com? you don't have a location posted, so i just used mine but it may give you an idea. the duratracs are pretty f'in nasty.

i'm really not a fan or the MTR's with kevlar...from what i have heard, they don't last long at all and i think they look stupid with the directional/non directional tread pattern

what kind of driving do you do?

Only bad thing about the treadwrights is some ppl get nervous about using them on a daily driver b/c of blowout risk. And in my opinion, (from what I can see in pictures online) the all the tires that treadwright makes don't really have much of a sidewall...

Vote: My pic would go for the KM2, just cause I know so many of my buddies that have raved about their off road capabilities and if rotated and balanced appropriately they get great mileage too. I do also really like the MTZ but I don't know as much about them. Another MT you might look at is the Nitto Trail Grappler... fairly new tire so size selection isn't great and price tag is high

I dunno about the new MT/Rs with kevlar but I had 3 sets of the old ones (285/75R16) and they were AWESOME! I can't say anything about tread life cuz my odo on my old truck went out & I never knew the mileage. But they were great in mud and on rocky trails. They rode pretty well too IIRC but I never paid attention to ride quality in that truck cuz I didn't expect anything great, I just loved the way they looked and handled off road.

I had a 7-8" piece of 3/8-1/2" diameter rebar pierce the tread and some top layers of rubber about 4" inward and pop out through the top of the sidewall. The only way to get the rebar out was to yank it out and that ripped the tread and some of the outer rubber. The tire was missing that strip of the tread, but never lost air, never showed belts, and ran another 6 months and on several road trips (probably ~10,000 more miles) until it was time to replace the whole set.

I voted MTZ I know people who have them and love them, though I've also heard great things about the km2. I think you are good either way.

Try treadwright.com. VERY high quality retreads, and they look like normal name brand tires. You can even request what casing you want. They are probably the best retread out there. MANY people use them off road. You could save about half. I got some BFG A/T's. They look like new from the store. Nobody noticed when balancing, and they have a good warranty.

They use factory casings of your choice. The sidewall is the same as OEM. At least on the BFG A/T's I bought. I didnt see the previous poster recommend treadwright before I did, but they are a good company.

I have 35in km2's and love them, you won't be disappointed with km2's. I want to get the MTR's or mtz's also for my next set I've always liked the way they looked and heard they get good mileage.

I used to work for Discount Tire/Americas Tire for about 2 years and sold many sets of the mtr with kevlar when they first came out. Back then they only came white out because the tire is asymmetrical/directional they might come black out now but I'm not sure..I think white out is ugly but if you like them that's cool just a heads up. I have heard they ride really well though.

After reading through this Mud TIRES: BFGoodrich KM2, Goodyear MTR Kevlar, or Swamper SSR - Page 3 - Expedition Portal Forum I've narrowed it down to the MTZ again or the KM2. If I lived in the desert I'd consider the MTR Kevlar but here in Arkansas I think these are my best choices.

Im in the same boat, so I'm going with the destination mt's 315/75/16

I love my Maxxis Bighorns and they are probably one of the cheapest M/Ts around, but still high quality. Summit Mud Dawgs are the same exact tires as the Bighorns and even made by Maxxis (I actually use one for my spare because the tread pattern is identical) and they're even cheaper. Probably ~$800-850 for a set of 4 315s on ebay.

1) Is there a tall 35" skinny tire that fits on the stock 16" rim? Kind of like how there's the 285/55/16 33" tire.

2) If so, is it possible to mount a skinny 35" tire in a runner with a 3" suspension lift, if not what other mods would be necessary?

haha ya miller i might be picking up a set of General Grabber DOTs once i go to 35s bc i like how it has a decent aggressive tread but is more of a A/T.

YA i vote for Toyo MTs too but ya price is crazy so id say if its just between the KM2 or MTZ, i vote KM2!
