This is where the line output converter could work in theory..

Scion headunit speaker siginals> LOC > Pac TATO > JBL Amp

1) what exactly is in a LOC? does it just convert wires, or are there other electronics going on inside it? what would stop someone from stripping the rcas of the TATO and just soldering those directly to the speaker outputs of the scion

2) on the same token, what exactly is inside the TATO that makes it so special? is it just some resistors and other cheap electronics? could one be made for cheap?

we need an electrical engineer around here to shoot us some diagrams to make our own converter that goes directly from the speaker outputs of the scion unit to the JBL amp!! this person would make a pretty penny on the side from all of us toyota owners that would like to go this route!

Okay guys after reading through everything and coming to the conclusion that yes the scion unit will work...sort of. You will get power, sound and steering wheel controls, BUT no JBL AMP connection right???

Back up camera / USB adapter question

I finally got time to install the back up camera and all in all it went smoothly. The install was pretty straight forward, it just took some time to route the wires from the tailgate into the rear of the truck and then up to the front of truck and behind the radio. I mounted the camera in the factory location a little to the left of the left license plate light.

I used this camera on ebay for $36 and used this harness from btbsa for $35. Beat sonic also makes a harness but it's around $100 and the one I used works just as well.

I used this thread as reference while doing the install. Not exactly the same but was useful for sure.

I am very happy with the install so far (it's been about a week) but still waiting for some rain to see if the camera holds up. The camera is waterproof according to the seller but I'll find out soon enough.


I can post pics of camera and headunit while in reverse if anyone is interested.

I have been using the OEM Toyota/Scion USB adapter modified and it works okay but it will randomly drop the connection a few times a week and doesn't work with iPhone 5s lightening cable. Do you think I could cut the OEM Toyota USB adapter cord in half and splice on a standard USB A female cable on the other end?

Would love to see the reverse camera in action on the head unit, might just be enough to knock me off the fence and do this.

Back Up cameras are one of the many items we install at work, so the know-how and tools are a snap, its the motivation that I lack at the moment.

Are you talking about the 10 pin or 16 pin connector? Mine fit with no problems. They were definitely snug but no trimming was necessary. I would try again before you go cutting anything.


Also, I successfully spliced a standard USB A female to the connector side of the OEM Toyota USB adapter harness and it's working perfectly so far with my iPod. Below is a pinout diagram I made that will hopefully help anyone else that's trying to do this.

2016 Scion Touchscreen

Just came across the 2016 version. Definitely looks different. Screen is 7" as compared to 6.1" with the 2014-2015. Functionality at first glance looks the same. Not sure what color the back lighting is or the size as compared to 2014-2015. Not sure what the connections on the back look like either. Just thought I'd share. Check it out.

Well that's good news about the JBL Synthesis stereo owners. I'll keep an eye on this thread. All of my speakers are new so the only thing left is HU!

I replied to both PMs. For anyone else wondering, unevolved is the member who has posted exactly what you'd be needing and his info is how I completed the task. You need the following.

T10015 FR-S Touch screen - Cost varies
Metra TYTO-01 JBL Amplifier Interface Harness - $54 - Amazon - Do NOT buy used, I tried to do that to save a few bucks and it didn't work when I received it.
Metra 71-1761 Harness - $12 - Amazon
PT546-00120-CH Conversion Harness - $30 - TRDparts4u.com
PT546-00120-AD Antenna Adapter - $20 - TRDparts4u.com

After you have what you need, you connect the things that have matching connections and splice the reverse harness to the Metra TYTO and everything should work. I have had zero issues with sound cutting out, but after I initially plugged everything in, the max volume wasn't all that loud (especially on bluetooth). I adjusted the TYTO and plugged back in the old headunit to make sure the volume was all the way up before I disconnected it and that seems to be less of an issue now.

now we just need to figure out how to replace the buggy TYTO harness. i'll ask again, what exactly does that thing do? are there any electronics in there, or is it just simply a converter and could be replaced by soldering different connections?

That is a VERY good question. I bought it simply because I knew that buying it would work thanks to Unevolved. I have a theory that you could simply buy the reverse harness and a another harness that I can't remember the name/number of and splice those together...

I didn't actually test that theory, but maybe once I have some down time and spare cash, I will.

I sent it back. I wasn't happy that I had wasted $40 bucks and Amazon's return policy is pretty lenient. I did open it up before I sent it back. It's a circuit board but I'm not sure what it does. I think I have read on here it converts analog to digital or vise versa, only to be converted back to what it started again as once the signal reaches the amp. I found the connector I was thinking of...I was thinking that if you could convert the speaker outs on the reverse harness to female RCA plugs, this could work. To my knowledge (which I fully admit is limited and quite possibly wrong), RCA plugs are a negative central wire with a positive outer wire. Maybe you will follow what I am saying, since it sounds like you've seen the wiring diagrams...

Basically if you could convert the individual negative and positive wires for the LF/LR and RF/RR speakers to RCA female plugs using this...

I should have tried it before I just went with the TYTO. It would essentially be maybe $30 in parts to test the theory and possibly prove that the TYTO is an unnecessary step.

So if we use the Pioneer T10015, why do we need the Metra harness with the RCA? I thought the T10015 didn't have RCA on the back of the unit? Maybe im getting units confused.
