Hood insulation missing on TE?

Not just a mental barrier. It wouldn't make sense to have Lexus if Toyota creeps up into their price range.
 
I heard that Toyota just takes away a few things on each generation and they are just preparing us for the 6th gen. It will not have a hood at all.

It will just be one cool, large scoop. I can't wait !! And there you will be, still trying to convert the readers here en masse to the 4th generation !

Before you get too carried away the sheet metal on our 4Runners, including the hood, is a structural component. Here's how:
Hood - While not designed to carry any load, it is integral in a front end collision as it is designed to fold and offer resistance to the incoming force of whatever you hit (or hits you)
Fenders, Doors Quarter Panels and Roof- Sheetmetal "skin" is attached to door frame by welds and adhesive to stiffeners which will hold them together during a side impact, causing them to act together to resist bending in an impact.

Imagine driving your 4Runner around with no sheetmetal, just the inner stiffeners, and getting hit. Yes, the sheetmetal plays an integral part of the vehicle's structure.

Thickness of the metal is not as important as the rigidity of the metal, which is accomplished through metallurgy and what we usually think of as "creases" or "curves" of the sheetmetal. Ever wonder why a panel is not perfectly flat on any vehicle?

And finally, hail damage. I have seen hail dent a fire truck hood and break plywood. 1/4" steel plate is what you need to be impervious to hail.

Hoods are never structural in that sense - they're only needed to make things more aerodynamic and to stop people from putting their body parts against moving things in the running engine. The creases in the hood are so it'll crumple neatly, along with the hooks by the hinges. Otherwise they have this tendency to decapitate the people in the front row of the car - an ironic side effect to a structurally sound hood.

The rest of the sheet metal, especially the stuff that's glued on, yes, it's part of the structure, even on framed bodies. Two glued together pieces of sheet metal in the right shapes will be structural. On doors there are three - there is this 'w' shaped thing called a side impact beam.

I think this missed the point though - thickness of sheet metal != quality.

The hood is non structural.They put the extra steel and money in something that matters like a stronger frame with new doublers and supports and a 12 bolt rear end with a bigger/stronger ring and pinion which are known weak points on the older 120 platform. I'd take that trade off any day of the week. Where do you think the added 400lb+ is in a 5tth Gen compared to a 4th Gen??. I'd bet it went into the extra safety like full air bag protection,the new 8.2" 12 bolt rear end and from Toyota's own words "extensive frame and body reinforcements have been added, using high-tensile materials to add strength." Curious to see where other people think the extra weight came from because as noted it wasn't the hood?

4th vs 5th

If you wanted all that but the black carpet, why didnt you buy a 4th gen? The 4th gen seems like it would fit your pickyness a lot better.

Tried that for months - but the 4Runners holding their value so well - and owners putting miles on them like crazy - I was basically looking at buying a 3year old vehicle with no warranty, that had 30,000 plus miles on it and paying in the low $30's or getting the year end close out deal on the 2011 for $35,500 Liked the bigger size, like the newer looks - just not a huge fan of the interior. Wish they would offer a medium gray in seats - which would look better with the black dash, carpet, door panels. Plus with their exterior color schemes of white, black, silver, charcoal and salsa - seems like a gray interior would look good with all of those. Getting used to it gradually.
 
Isn't the sheet metal this thin largely to account for crumple zones? It's supposed to fold up like an accordion.

It does not matter what it is. My 1995 f-350 got hail damage when I was in KS, how thick do you think sheet metal should be? My 1971 chevy truck even got hail damage and that darn hood weighed a ton. Try new Volvos,all body panels made with high streight steel, we got caught in heavy hail storm, not a single dent, amazing, I wishe every car was made like that, here in Colorado - hail capital of he world.
 
The hood is actually designed to crumple. If you look at the underside/outer edge about half way you will see the added crumple zones. One little bump (from the front) on that hood and it's history (can not be repaired).

As far as insulation, it has two purposes; to prevent heat damage to the paint over time and reduce engine noise. The only purpose for removing it, is cost.

BTW - The insulation for a non-scoop hood will have to be modified to work on a hood with a scoop and the scoop area does not get insulation. Also the OEM insulation is very expensive. I would use an aftermarket stick-back insulation, if you want it insulated.

That scoop isn't functional in the least, so I don't see a problem sealing it up. I might have to seal it at the scoop though, not at the hood - less space and would keep it from loosening up the surrounding insulation.

I'd be doing it for noise, but already this thing is going to be much quieter than my NISMO truck with a CAI that screamed at 3k rpm
